The Bamboo Underground, The Smartphone Edition

By Tom Chandler 2/4/2012

In the past I've populated this site with bamboo fly rods, bamboo cars, bamboo clock radios -- even pants made from bamboo. Basically, all the bamboo gear you'd need if you wanted to prove to your fly fishing buddies that you're better than they are.

Now we bring you the latest in high-tech gadgetry for the bamboo snob. The bamboo smartphone:

Bamboo smartphones

It's a shame I'm already equipped with a water-and-shock-resistant Casio smartphone. Because nothing says "effete bamboo fly rod snob" more completely than a bamboo smartphone (though it would be better if it were engraved with something like "Friends that Fish Anything But Paynes Are No Friends At All").

Once again, it's left to the Trout Underground to maintain the high standards of snobbishness and elitism this sport needs to succeed over the next several decades.

No need to thank me, though a new ascot would be nice.

See you pretending to be rich, Tom Chandler.

I should design some fly boxes out of bamboo?!? Would anyone buy them?

Ha! kinda cool... there is another firm out in the interwebs land that does them... made out of all sorts of wood.. but, the Bamboo does have a nice ring too it... subtle too. and, I have to say - this made me chuckle "Once again, it’s left to the Trout Underground to maintain the high standards of snobbishness and elitism this sport needs to succeed over the next several decades."... Love your work! ... more Phil

I fish in a sweater vest, which means I'm so much more extreme than you sport coat types it's not even funny.

Yes, that's the phone. I'm pretty happy with it (outside of the bloatware added to it by Verizon, but they're a large communications company so their evilness is a given).

Tom, would it be this one: http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/casio-g-zone-commando/4505-6452_7-34660420.html ? 'cause I NEED a rugedized smartphone. I can feel my HTC Desire shitting itself everytime I get in the bellyboat - on the occasions it doesn't outright faint, that is...

@ Chris: I would describe these as "shallow built"! Ascot indeed... See ya at the cellphone store.

I certainly need one to go along with my cashmere sport coat. Perhaps a small compartment for those "go to" flies one might need while using the phone during an afternoon of fishing. One must be care full not to miss direct the the weave on the jacket while wading. An ascot may be a little over the top.

So Tom. Would you describe these cases as Parabolic? Dry Fly action? Progressive? Just asking. Chris
