CIVIL WAR FEDERAL (UNION) OFFICERS 1851 OFFICERS DUG SWORD BELT PLATE
Offered is this Civil War Federal(Union) Officers 1851 Sword Belt Plate. The plate was excavated using a metal detector at a cellar hole. This is the only Civil War plate I ever recovered. The buckle depicts a patriotic eagle. And was used by officers and enlisted cavalry carrying swords, most were manufactured in the 1850's to end of the Civil War. The plate was made of cast brass, the eagle is integral to the casting and the wreaths of German silver were applied. The belt loop has broken off(left side) and all of the silver wreath is missing on the right side; about half still remains on the left side. On the right side where the silver wreath was. There are two places where it shows through(holes) possibly from the silver deteriorating in the ground for over 145? years. This is an EXTREMELY RARE hand-painted UNIQUE bulldog figurine smoking a cigar and wearing a Union Jack vest from Bairstow Manor Collectibles in Staffordshire. England. It forms part of a small series of Bulldogs in two sizes. This one being the smaller version standing 4.5 inches(14 cms) tall. As can be seen from the photo. The character is intended to suggest the'Bulldog Spirit' of Sir Winston Churchill, together with the adornment of a Union Jack Flag. 8 Antique Civil War Envelopes Addressed to Same Union Captain Plus Cop of Diary
Here is a rare opportunity to own 8 different artifacts/envelopes addressed to the same Union Captain in addition to a(published but out of print) diary made from his own writings of his day to day experiences in the Civil War. This item consists of eight original postal stationary or stamped envelopes addressed to"Captain G. F. Glossbrenner. Co II, Regt. lll, Vet, Vol 1, Brigade& Division 15 Armycorps” Union Army" as well as a copy of his diary published in the early 1990’s. They are in good overall condition. All envelopes appear to be postmarked on different dates in 1863 and 1864. Captain George F. Glossbrenner was born in Ganges, OH on January 27, 1838. and died in Olney, IL on March 29, 1915. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War after enlisting in the 8th regiment Illinois in April, 1861. He transferred to ... morethe 63rd Regiment Illinois volunteers when that unit was organized in January 1862 and commanded company I of the 63rd until his discharge in 1865. On all but one of the envelopes, Captn. Glossbrenner(known for keeping good records) apparently penned a brief record of the date& location where he received and answered the letter from the envelope. Please look closely at the scans to see these interesting records. For example one of them reads"Recd June 28 in camp near Stevenson, Ala" He also indicates he answered the letter on the same day at the same location. Captn. Glossbrenner is historically known for having written down his daily military experience. The writing used to create his published diary was passed down through his family until it was published in the 1990's by his hometown museum in cooperation with his direct descendents. The writing is now out of general print but a copy of is included with this purchase. Cap't Glossbrenner's diary records were reportedly a reference used in creating the famous Ken Burns Civil War PBS Documentary of a several years ago. Please ask questions if you have any! The case is in nice condition with only a couple very small non disfiguring nicks to the edge which I have pictured. This is a personal letter written to a Kate Smith from an enlisted man who is not named. The letter was written on May 29th 1864 in Chattanooga. He mentions being separated from his regiment. He mentions General Grant and Lee and how the war is going. He even predicts the fall of Richmond by the fourth of July. Below is a couple paragraphs from letter. Original and authentic. Used by company messengers to hold telegrams for delivery. Military style; made of heavy canvas with the same brass pin closures that are often seen on World War II U.S. Army canvas equipment belts and bags. Canvas shoulder strap with steel buckles. Size is approximately 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" x 1 1/2" deep. Two compartments inside. One large and one narrow. California, Teamsters on the Embarcadero on the beautiful glass plate/dish with vivid colors of the Embarcadero buildings, truck, longshoreman, the busy shipping& loading of supplies& goods during a day of harsh& trying time for laborers. It is signed by artist G. Mahan. You can see in my one picture what it says on the back of the plate. This plate was a momento of the Thirtieth Meeting of the Western Conference of Teamsters.
