HERES A SUPER NICE VARIAC FROM HI END LAB MANUFACTURER GENERAL RADIO.This is a model 200 C.Rated at 115vac 50/60 cycles 5 amps.Condition is near new. There are no burn spots or arcing on the wiper or windings. The windings also have all original lacquer intact. Mechanically the wiper and shaft movement are silky smooth.Hookup diagram plate and terminals are in likewise condition. The Knob and dial scale are VG + with no additional marks or scrapes on the scale. The knob has a few minor dings.This is a great item for the shop,to bring up older gear slowly and reform electrolytic caps. Up for auction is a 0-140vac Powerstat Variac made in the USA by the Superior Electric Co. Bristol, Conn. This item came from the San Diego City College by way of a legitimate auction. As can be seen clearly in the pictures this device is in excellent condition having no ugly dents, scratches or rust in either the front cover or the tinwork and the power cord is undamaged also. In fact it doesn’t look like it was used much at all. Apart from a couple of stickers the only defect is that the ID number C02109 has been etched faintly on the front cover. I connected my DVM to the transformer to show you both the low and high outputs. VARIAC W20M Autotransformer by General Radio 120 Volts High Stability Audiophile
Tested with my cheap digital meter it maxed at 127 volts STABLE. I'm inclined to think it's my equipment. Not the transformer that's amiss. Irregardless, that's well above the required voltage for a 110/120v 50-60 cycle device. Rescued it from a homeowner garage, it had one of the top knockouts missing, but was covered with black tape that had been there so long it was curled. I removed it and wiped the light coat of dust off, turned it upside down, nothing came out. Former owner was a lineman/electrician, lived in the same home for 60 years and was meticulous with his equipment. Heavy duty cord and plug. Solid unit. Electromechanical voltage regulators have always offered large power handling capacity with minimum bulk and cost. Superior Electric Powerstat variable transformer also known as an autotransformer and commonly called a"variac" Model 116-U. Rated 7.5 Amp 1Kva. This item came from a surplus equipment sale. It looks to me to be"homebrew" in origin using quality 50's-60's era components. Function-wise it works fine. All the components work as they should and the wiring is in good shape. The ammeter and voltmeter are Triplett Model 337-S 3" square versions. Voltage reads 0-150 VAC. Ammeter reads 0-5 Amp AC. Both of these are in the output circuit. Note the transformer is rated 7.5 amp but the meters are 5 amp. This instrument is enclosed in a metal, slant front cabinet. The top is hinged and will open to expose the components and wiring- see the photo. Finish is showing wear typical of it's age, but still in pretty good ... moreshape. The variable transfomer is wired for(2) inputs. A"115" input that will produce a 1:1 maximum output, i.e. 115 volts in produces a maximum of 115 volts out. The"135" volt input will produce a maximum of 135 volts out for a 115 volt input. In other words using the"135" input you can produce about 20 more volts output than your input voltage- in most cases your line voltage. Input is selected by plugging the power cord into either the"115" or"135" socket on the back and placing the rear toggle switch on top of the cabinet in the proper position. See the photo. Fuse protection is by way of an Elmenco fused plug on the power cord. The other toggle switch switches the ammeter in and out of the circuit. On the back panel are 4 pin and 6 pin"antique radio type" tube sockets. There are no connections to the 4 pin. The 6 pin has several connections to different points in the circuit- I'm not sure what the intention was for these- possibly for remote voltage monitoring?
