Which are“as is, dirty, untested, or sold by somebody who says, I don’t know anything about this equipment, this instrument has been completely refurbished, re-calibrated and is fully guaranteed to work perfectly right out of the box. The case was re-painted. The knobs were replaced. The output connectors were changed to the modern BNC type. All the capacitors were replaced and the unit was re-calibrated on all bands against a Hewlett-Packard 5328A frequency counter. It comes with a very clean reproduction copy of the original manual(with schematics) See the photos. The only thing that is not near-perfect is the carrying handle which shows signs of its age. As-is, dirty, not guaranteed or all of these. This instrument is perfect for the radio man who needs a good reliable signal generator that can be used without fixing it first. The manufacturer specified that the dial accuracy of this instrument is within 1% But did not specify 1% OF WHAT. There is a big difference between 1% of the indicated frequency on the dial and 1% of the full scale range. The percentage of indicated frequency is far tighter and more accurate than the percentage of full scale range. In calibrating this generator against a Hewlett-Packard frequency counter, it was set to an accuracy within 1% of the actual dial setting on all frequency bands except the very highest end of the top three bands. Those are within 3% of dial setting, which is well within 1% of the full-scale range. This instrument is supplied with a calibration data sheet that indicates the accuracy on all ranges. HP8640B Bench Signal Generator .5-512 MHz Nice Shape Works!
I have a pile of these HP8640B Generators. And pulled one out and powered it on. It looks like it is working for the most part, It tunes smoothly, and all the controls seems to work. I did not see a level on the output meter, so I hooked it to a spectrum analyzer and found it was putting out on all bands but the meter was not indicating the RF level, so maybe there is an issue in the power detector circuit or the meter switch(dirty contacts) It is not all beat up like a military unit usually is, this was at a private company that closed down. It has option 001, the internal variable frquency modulation source and is.5-512 MHz unit. There may be a problem with the 10 dB step on the attenuator, or it may need cleaned or something as it was not working.
