It also has some sort of cable with a DB-9 on one end and an 8-pin plug on the other. I couldn't find anywhere that it would plug in so it may not even belong to this. There's also two probes? each with a black and red alligator clip on one end and a double pin plug on the other. These do look like they belong to the unit. But I hooked up a 25 foot wire as an antenna and was able to pick up actual broadcasts on every band. I make no guarantees beyond that. I tested all the tubes with a Hikock 600A and replaced any that didn't test as new. I am not a radio guy, so I couldn't test much deeper. This uses the dual frequency Bliley crystal so you can use the 1 MHz switch position(on the receiver) to find the nearest 1 MC point and then use the 100 KC position for a more accurate position. For the ham band spread ranges you only need to the 100Kc. mode. This works fine the out put was 100.002 KC and 1000.14 KC. The Bliley crystals are only accurate in the 100KC mode. I wasn't sure what this calibrator was for. So I asked a friend of mine who knows about Ham radio and other radio engineering topics. This is what he told me: It's like a ruler. Except for radio. Turn this on, and put it near your AM radio, and as you tune, you'll hear a"quiet spot" on the dial every 100 kHz. If you were into shortwave back then, most radio's dial markings were to vague to figure out exactly what frequency an unknown station was transmitting on. Using this, you could count the 100kHz"marks" from a"known" station to the"unknown" station. Or, if you are a ham operator, you'd use it to stay within the FCC's allocated band limits for hams. The metal can contains a crystal, oscillating at 100 kHz. Back then, kHz was expressed as"KC" kilocycles) The"trimmer" ... moreallowed you to"callibrate the calibrator. So I plugged it in with an AM radio playing within a foot of it. And sure enough. As I traveled up the dial, the radio was silent at 100kHz intervals. The"tune" light on the radio was on, but the signal was silent. So I switched the calibrator off at several of these"silent spots" and the"tune" light went off and I heard static. Based, on this, I say it's in working condition. The base of this unit measures 3" X 4 3/4" X 1 9/16" It stands approx 4" tall with the tubes installed. It has a shielded wire coming out of it. Not sure what that's for. The test I did was with the AM radio picking up the signal over the air. This will be a great addition to your vintage electronics collection! Low starting bid. As recommended by any specialist. This colorimeter needs to be calibrated annually with the aid of a spectroradiometer which can be serviced through the site or by a local dealer. This device has been stored with temperature and humidity in mind to minimize drift, however the drift of accuracy is inevitable and calibration of the device is always recommended. The same goes for any brand new colorimeter that you purchase; even a brand new device is likely to have inaccuracies and must be corrected(otherwise the entire point of TV calibration is moot!
