The digital RPM display is clear. The display(and the change in sound of the motor inside) indicates that the speed control does vary the speed. We do not have the equipment to verify the RPM but we did test this unit(and others we are selling) using the very scientific method of filling a styrofoam cup with water. Dropping a paper clip in it, and then watching the paper clip revolve at different speeds depending on what RPM was displayed in the LCD window. As noted in the"Conditions" section above. There are some of what look like"flecks" in the LCD display. They do not however affect the readability of the display.
