I believe this is a"Lissajous Pattern Generator" The device(in simple terms) would have been mounted on a stable bench. A pinpoint strong light source would be pointed at the lens. The device has a"tuning fork" like structure that is set in motion by an on-board electromagnet. The tuning fork is mechanically connected to the lens unit. When the tuning fork vibrates the lens also vibrates and the projected light beam displays a"sine wave" type of pattern that was studied.
