Here is a vintage. All tube, Heathkit audio signal generator model SG-72A. This unit is identical to the IG-72A except from what I understand, the S denotes it was factory built. As you can tell from the faceplate silkscreen, the SG-72A was made after Schlumberger bought Heathkit. Other nearly identical Heathkit generators to this one include the IG-72 and the IG-9. This unit is very clean and very presentable in your shop. I touched up some paint chips on the black case and installed the banana jacks where a BNC connector was mounted. The banana jacks are not Heathkit originals. But look very similar. Because of its age, this instrument has some minor flaws. Please take a close look at the pictures for more details. This generator is fully working. I calibrated it. But please note that my test equipment, though good enough for rock'n roll, probably wouldn't meet NBS accuracy. Case in point is my B&W Model 400 Distortion Meter which measured less than 0.1% distortion. But I bet my trusty 400 is not very far off. It generates audio tones 20-200khz at a maximum level of 1.0V RMS into 50 ohms or 3.5V RMS with the SLN6225A transformer and 10V RMS with the SLN6214A transformer. The oscillator can be powered by 120VAC line or by 15VDC minimum batteries to eliminate any AC line hum. This generator can be used as a signal source for any audio signal between 20-200khz or to modulate an RF signal generator. Up for sale is a highly sought after HP-239 Ultra low distortion audio generator. Excellent working condition. Original operation/ service manual is also included. For complete specs see photo#6. A copy of original sales receipt is included. Note that it was sold 12-1984. Unit is almost 30 years old but still kicks ass in terms of performance. Note also that two of the fragile knobs are glued already. But it works fine. Item is sold as is. HEATHKIT IG-72 AUDIO GENERATOR (Same as AG-9A)
This is Heathkit IG-72 Audio Generator. It is in mostly-working condition. But it is unstable at some frequencies. It could use some more cleaning of the switches and controls and probably a replacement of some of the electrolytic capacitors, particularly C8, the feedback capacitor. The fact that it works as it does shows that the tubes are in good condition. It is in very good cosmetic condition. The only defect being a ding in the back and bottom of the case. There is no manual. But copies are available on-line, or I can e-mail the successful bidder a copy on request. Note that the IG-72 is just a cosmetic re-working of the AG-9A. The two are electrically identical. The IG-72 manual does have a detailed schematic of the"Notch Filter Circuit" the resistors and capacitors that set the frequency) whereas the AG-9A manual did not. ... moreThe last image is a FFT of the output at 1KHz. The peak is the fundamental. Harmonics are down in the noise of the oscilloscope FFT. Around-60dB, which corresponds to the specification of 0.1% distortion. Update: I've found a replacement for C8. Which seems to have fixed the instability problem. Instead of a 20uF, 200V cap. I've used a 40uF, 450V unit. The value of this cap is not critical as long as it's a low impedance at all frequencies of interest, so using a larger value is OK.

Heathkit AG-9A Audio Signal Generator This unit has been part of my radio bench for many years and is in working condition. It is all original including the filter capacitors but they are still good as of now. Clean output with no hum. The output frequency(as read on a counter) is very close to the dialed frequency on the generator. Non smoking home. The generator is in very nice cosmetic condition with just a few scrapes and marks consistent with it's age. No manual. Sold"AS IS" and without warranty but it is as described. I have recently retired.
