General Hood abandoned Atlanta on last Thursday night. following which is his official dispatched. Revised Edition. 200pp. Rebound in later red hardcover with original leather spine pasted down over later spine. As shown. This is an early Louisiana imprint of the Regulations for the Army of the Confederate States; very Scarce, this is truly a Confederate gem. Now, this copy was once used as a scrapbook after the War, as the title page and the following 60 pages have some adhesive stains, remnants of paper pastedowns, and similar damage, but most have been removed and the text is still mostly legible. There are some resulting tears and chips, loss and the like as a result, please note. Nearly complete, this is lacking pp 5/6, 11-14, 21-26, 41-42, 47-8, 55-56, ... moreotherwise remains complete through page 200 at the end. The last two hudred pages remain pleasantly browned, with only one page used as a pastedown. This copy looks to have been owned by Lieutenant James Simpson of the 5th VA Cavalry, Company K, known as the" Princess Anne Cavalry, officially the 5th Virginia Cavalry in the Confederate army, as he has signed it many times on the first and last few pages, pastedowns and more, but iupon examination many other soldiers of his Regiment(Cos K, I, and others) many high ranking, have also signed it, so this may have been a reference copy for the same Regiment throughout the War. A fascinating gem. Other Id'd names include Capt E. Burroughs, Lieut. Livingstone Ingram, LL Lomax, A T Herbert, Charlie B. The following item is a very nice CSA camp axe that was dug near the Widow Tapp Farm on the Wilderness Battlefield(private property) The Widow Tapp Farm was General Robert E. Lee's Headquarters during the battle. This camp axe was dug behind Confederate Lines very near to the farm. It is solid in all aspects and has been cleaned and coated for preservation. This specimen is as clean and complete as they get. It measures almost 7 inches in length. It would make a nice addition to a Civil War Camp display.

Traveling the Paper Trails of American History Rounding Up Stray Hogs in Virginia(See below for scans) 1 page stampless folded letter written by John G. Meem at Lynchburg. VA, on December 1, 1843, to John Morgan at Mount Jackson, Shenandoah County, VA. Pages measure approx. 7 3/4" x 10" Meem writes to Morgan to give him news of hogs that have gone astray on their way to market: Jordan arrived at Mr. Apperson's on Wednesday evening& here yesterday. Before he came. Zekiel had arrived telling me that he left the hogs some 28 miles back not able to get along. I have dispatched Jordan& another wagon after them, together with Gilbert& Zekiel without knowing what they will do to get them here. I learnt since Gilbert left, that they were coming on some 4 or 5 miles from where Zekiel left them with 32, having left 4 miles ... moreback some 12, 6 others along the road beginning at Staunton. They are likely to cause me more trouble than I expected& with it some expense. This is a very inclement day, having snowed last night and it has rained all day. He adds a postscript: I fear a crowded market& low prices on Monday. John Gaw Meem(1794-1873) was a wealthy merchant who divided his time between Lynchburg and Mt. Airy. His plantation in Shenandoah County, located about four miles south of Mount Jackson. Gilbert" in the letter is most likely his son Gilbert Simrall Meem(1824-1908) who may be best known as a Brigadier General in the Virginia Militia who served a short time in the Confederate Army. He managed Mt. Airy for his father and inherited it upon his father's death. He built a nearby mansion that he named Strathmoor. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates, the Virginia Senate, and was a noted breeder of livestock. He moved to Seattle and was appointed Postmaster General by President Grover C

Offered is a letter from a Confederate POW at Fort Delaware. It is in good condition. Four pages with correspondence on two, and clearly datelined Fort Delaware, June 10, 1862. With accompanying envelope addressed to a cousin in Ohio, and also bearing the examiner's notation along left edge of the envelope. SEE SCANS for envelope and the letter. It was written by Conrad D. Boyd who was a 20 year-old student when he enlisted in August, 1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served briefly- two months- in the Nelson Light Artillery, and later served in the VA 19th Infantry. He was captured the last day of May in 1862 at Seven Pines. Confined at Fort Delaware from where he wrote this letter asking assistance in getting paroled.
