The Completed& Projected Railroads, the Diffferent Railroad Stations and Growing Railroad Towns. The New Towns on the Rivers and interior and the New Counties up to the Year 1884. Description: An extremely scarce and important map of Florida drawn by Horace Drew in 1884. This highly uncommon map. The earliest known example of which was issued in 1867, is considered to be the only pocket map of Florida actually printed in Florida. The first edition of this map was printed by Columbus Drew from his offices in Jacksonville Florida and subsequently updated in an unknown number of editions into the 1880s. This example was printed by Horace Drew, son and successor ... moreto Columbus. It reflects the rapid and hopeful development of Florida through the middle and late 19 century, with numerous railways, roads, and canals noted. Of particular note is the Lucie Canal, shown here leading from Lake Okeechobee to the Atlantic. This canal was part of a plan, supported by Drew, to drain the Everglades via a series of well placed water channels. Fortunately the Lucie canal was never built and the unique Everglades biosphere has been preserved for us to enjoy today. Also of interest is the extensive notation in the lower left quadrant regarding the Florida Land Survey. Even in the late 19th century much of Florida remained federally administrated Public Land. It was the work of the Florida Land Survey, upon which this map is based, to plat out the land for sale to settlers. Drew's notations explain the process and how do identify land available for purchase. Drew additionally notes the sites of various important battles during the Seminole Wars. Considered the Holy Grail of 19th century Florida cartography, this map is a must for any serious collection focusing on the American Southeast. Including St. Georges Sound. Progress maps of this sort were made to illustrate work of the survey and accompanied the Superintendent of the Survey's annual report to Congress. The survey began work in this region in 1848. Work progressed slowly though the 1850s and ground to a halt altogether in the early 1860s due to the events of the American Civil War. Detailed, and highly attractive 1848 nautical chart or maritime map of Florida and the Bahamas by E. and G. W. Blunt. The chart covers Florida from 29°37' N, or, roughly speaking, from the latitude of Lake George south past the Florida Keys(then called the Florida Reef) as far as Cuba and from the longitude of Cape St. George eastwards to include the Bahama Islands. The map features limited inland detail but a fine mapping of coastal regions and countless depth soundings, especially around Tampa Bay, the Florida Keys, and throughout the Bahama Banks- a notoriously dangerous area for ships even with such a fine chart as this. An inset in ... morethe lower left quadrant focuses on Key West and the surrounding reefs. Around this time wrecking- the practice of salvaging from shipwrecks- had turned Key West into the richest city in Florida. Blunt attributes his inset of Key West to George Gauld, a late 18th century British naval surveyor who produced several extensive surveys of the area. The remainder of the chart is attributed to the work of Colonel Albert of the U.S. Topographical Bureau and U.S. Navy Surveyor Commander Powell. Twelve shore profiles decorate the upper right quadrant. Blunt's chart, which first appeared in his 10 sheet maritime atlas of 1827, represents the height of Nautical mapping in and around the Florida peninsula until the work of the U.S. Coast Survey in the 1850s. Oriented to the west. This map covers from the eastern tip of Cuba to the Bahamas and from Florida to Exuma, Bahamas. This is the first maritime chart to focus in such remarkable detail on the southeast coast of Florida. Portions of the Florida coast covered include the region from West Palm Beach to Miami and the northern Florida Keys. Several of the northern Florida Keys are named, including Key Biscayne(Cayo ... morede Biscambos) Cape Canaveral is also noted(Cabo de Canaveral) A decorative title cartouche featuring New World Fauna and stylized American Indians appears in the upper left quadrant. Cartographically Van Keulen derived this map from the 1675 map of Arent Roggeveen, Pascaerte Van't Canael de Bahama as well as from Hessel Gerritsz's 1631 chart. The cartographic work of compiling this map is attributed in the title to Claes Jansz Vooght, a known partner in the Keulen firm. From a historical perspective, this map appeared at the height of the Golden Age of Caribbean Piracy(c. 1650- 1730) and nowhere were pirates more likely to strike than in this narrow passage between Florida and the Bahamas. Dutch pirates operating with the support of the Dutch West India Company dominated the 17th century until the rise of English piracy in the 1690s. Roughly three years after this map was issued English(and many other) pirates began establishing themselves in the Bahamas, which were ideally situated to raid Spanish treasure galleons on en route from Havana to St. Augustine, their last stop in the New World before turning out to Sea for Europe. Here's what I know. 1) It seems that it has been refaced in the past to.109 which is around an Otto Link 8. Refacing work looks pretty good. And it plays really nicely and evenly through the whole chromatic range. I personally did not do the work, but I'm a perfectionist so I actually recommend a small clean up if given a chance to. 2) Upon being refaced. My second guess that it has been replated as well to silver. 3) Chamber is untouched. Table is untouched. Tiny teeth mark on bite plate but unnoticeable. 4) Mouthpiece length wise is 100 mm.
