These shelves were used in small Cafés at the end of the XIXth century. They were put on top of a cabinet. Usually behind the bar, to display items the bartender wanted to be easily reachable or seen from clients, like nice glasses or bottles of choice. These shelves may have accompanied Lautrec, Van Gogh, or the many artists that cherished the very spirit conveyed by these small parisian or provincial places. Shelves like these are very rare to find. Age: mid to end of XIXth century. Condition: Very good condition with traces of age. Remember this is a real antique. So it is not like new of course. The onyx is in exceptional conditon as I didn't notice any cracks or chips. The entire stand appears to be brass that looks to be in the original finish with a great patina. Cabinet is 7 5/8" deep and door opens from the left. Inside are 2 original glass shelves that can be removed. Door held on with two heavy hinges with flat head screws. The outside cabinet has some missing wood veneer on the front left of the bakelite knob. Also missing some veneer on the right top corner of the door edge. On the bottom outside corner is a crack in the wood. I was going to seal with wood glue but thought I would leave for the new owner to decide. We are pleased to offer to the market this beautiful antique fireplace mantle. This piece has great character and dates to the Victorian era. This piece measures 82" High x 60 3/16" at the widest point and it has a depth of 10.5" The mantle back has the main center mirror flanked by two smaller mirrors with shelves on the sides. The front of the mirror has turned& reeded columns holding a shelf above it. There are attached cornice pieces above the two smaller mirrored sections that are topped with a stick& ball design. This same design is also found on the crest at the top center of the mantle. There are hand carved medallions and curliques on this piece as well. This is a gorgeous mantle that will definately make a statement in a room. There are age and use appropriate scratches. Dings, divets, cracks, repairs, and ... moreother marks on this piece. There are issues with the finish as well from being stored. Structurally the piece is solid and sound with no rot or losseness. It does appear that someone at some point had done some gluing on this.
