Upon close inspection we believe this could well read"J.H. Pierneef" Most of the landscapes known by Pierneef were of the South African highveld. Which provided a lifelong source of inspiration for him. Pierneef's style was to reduce and simplify the landscape to geometric structures, using flat planes, lines and colour to present the harmony and order in nature. We believe this slightly impressionist painting could be an earlier plein-air piece by Pierneef ... moredating to the 1910-20 period. There is an old Pretoria framers label verso and the painting is housed in a quality heavy later gallery frame. Saucers are 5 1/2" across and cups are 2" high. You get 1 teapot. 1 creamer, 1 sugabowl. and 4 cups and saucers. 1 saucer has a flake repair. all other pieces no chips or crazing. No cracks in any cup/saucer sets. No cracks in creamer sugarbowl. Teapot has a firing split inside, and what looks like a glaze crack on bottom, that doesnt appear to come through to inside. Vintage Japanese Black Lacquered Jewelry Box w/Mother of Pearl Inlay& Painted Pagoda& Landscape- c.1960s Pretty vintage black lacquered Japanese jewelry box w/mother of pearl inlay in nice vintage condition but with some damage. It's a music box but either the wind mechanism is broken or the music mechanism itself is- to me it seems like the wind part needs to be repaired- it turns but doesn't seem to grip anything in order to play. The metal hinges and nails at the back also not in perfect condition- seem like they need to be lightly hammered down- I pressed them down but with opening/closing they rise up a little again and need to be pushed back down. Esp. right side- that said, the hinge/spring mechanism at the back seems very solid overall. Wonderful decorative elements- mother of pearl inlay around border of box top(1st ... morephoto) and great coloration of the Japanese scene/landscape- blues. Reds, golds- pagodas, trees, birds, I think a snow covered Mt. Fuji in the background but it's somewhat faded so not immediately noticeable, also the red base of the 2nd pagoda on box top is also faded. All side paintings and inside gold tree painting in middle of box in very nice condition. Nice small arcs at bottoms of both sides. Wood is in good condition. There are a few light bits aware around certain parts of the edges, some very light"scratches" nicks etc but pretty minor- overall nice condition for its age. Mirror inside in good condition too and very nice because it's wide but doesn't distort when you look into it- you can see your entire face, neck and jewelry. Front clasp latch good. Adolf Pirsch (1858-1929) "Landscape study with flying bird", Oil painting
Adolf Pirsch was born on July 4th 1858 in Gradaz in Krain. At the time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, todays Slovenia. His first teacher was Heinrich Schwach, Academy and gallery director in Graz, who for himself studied under Baron Leys in Antwerp. Adolf Pirsch concluded his studies at the Graz Academy in 1879, went then to Italy where he spent a year in Venice, Florence and Rome. His first commissioned works were altar paintings for churches in Graz and Marburg and his first portrait exhibition took place in 1896 in Graz. During this period he met his future model and close friend the Belgian Olga Legros. His most famous works of this period are the portraits of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef and Pope Leo XIII, which can be seen in the Vatican. He lived many years in Vienna where his female portraits were of great popularity. After ... morespending some years in Dresden he moved to England for the next 14 years and became a requested portrayer of the English high society. He dedicated his studies to English portrait painting of the 18th century, the influence of which is clearly noticeable on his portraits. With the beginning of the World War I the Austrian artist was seen as"the enemy" in England, he lost great part of his fortune and left towards Holland to his second partner and future wife the painter Hanna Fieke. From 1916 on he lived in Haarlem with Hanna and daughter Ada. In the Netherlands he achieved the height of his career, again his fame as a talented portrait painter went around and he became- as once in England- the high society's favorite. From this period are the portraits of the Dutch monarchs and the various portraits of Wilhelm II, the former German Emperor exiled in the Netherlands. In 1926 a very successful large Pirsch-exhibition took place, with prominent visitors such as the Prince of Orange, husband of the Queen. In 1929 Adolf Pirsch died in Graz, Austria. Paul Lauritz "Sierra Mountain Stream" California Landscape
The paintings from photos. 2,3,4 and 5 are used for comparative purposes. The second photo shows a landscape by Lauritz that sold for $10,800 a few months ago at John Morans. It's much bigger I prefer the one that I am selling but I have only sen the one that I am selling close up and I have only have see n the one image of the forested oil painting. The third photo shows a winter-spring painting that is much smaller at 16"x20" that sold at Bonhams for $9000 5 years ago. That price doesn't include shipping. Insurance and taxes or SATISFACTION GUARANTEED and maybe not auction house commissions. The fourth painting is a Lauritz that is the same size that sold at Bonhams for $7500 August 7, 2012. The last painting is Lauritz's most expensive painting that sold for $74,000. All the others might be in good or excellent condition ... morebut I know that the one I am selling is of very good condition. Regardless of what I paid. At $2500, for a colorful Lauritz, is a good buy I think. I cannot understand in this hot market for name artists how this hasn't sold. Many others I would say this about particularly the Spears, the De Longpre, the Dorsey(two sold) the Drumauxs(one sold) and the Chapples(one sold) O.K. just about everything because I like them all and the condition is good to excellent in everything. One painting for sale. The first one. The other four are used for illustrative purposes. If someone is serious about this painting I will take it out of the box and take images. No one has asked. That second painting is a beautiful painting that is also by Lauritz of the Sierra Mountains in CA. It is quite a bit larger at 28"x32" and it went for over $31,600 on 2/19/08 at John Moran's in California. Please remember that much less than one tenth of 1% of LISTED artists have the stature of Paul Lauritz whose highest price at auction is over $74,000.
