Ok. Here's the deal. This can be the bargain of the lifetime for someone that can do the required work on this turbo! Firstoff, I want to say that the turbo is NOT suitable for industrial use. The turbo came out of a system that was out in the weather for years. Rain got down into the turbo and it is very corroded inside. When I first got it the rotor would not even turn! The lower end was disassembled and it was not as bad inside as it seemed. It cleaned up nicely and when it was put back together it was turning completely freely! The bearing was not touched by the rain so it is in good condition. The stack was not disassembled to clean the corrosion off the blades. That is a job beyond my experience on that model turbo. So it was connected to the controller, pumped down, and fired up. It works great! See youtube video http:youtu.be/FQE6RXrIqJc ... moreto see the turbo in action! The turbo has some unbalance from the corrosion so it is a bit rough starting up and stopping but once it gets past the unbalance point it smooths out and runs perfectly quietly! This corrosion and unbalance is why I say the turbo is not suited for industrial use. But for the hobby user it is fine and will produce a vacuum down in the low 10-6 torr range in spite of the corrosion. Now for the controller. This is the controller board only. No power supply. No connecting cable. That is because I don't have them! So, you will have to make the power supply and wire up a connecting cable for the turbo connector. This connector costs $35 from Mouser electronics. Sometimes they are available on ebay for less but it is hit and miss. You will need a small transformer to produce the 15 volt supplies and a 100 watt transformer to produce the 35 volts at 2 amps for the turbo motor. Airco Temescal 514 Turbomolecular High-Vacuum Pump: Big turbo pump, 8" Inlet!
For sale is a big Airco-Temescal turbo pump. I purchased this pump a while ago from my local university's surplus store with the intent to experiment and play around with such a large turbo pump. It unfortunately ended up just sitting around as I could never really find an excuse to use a turbo pump this big. Therefore. I am listing it here in the hopes that it finds a good home. The turbo is in decent shape. With some cosmetic scuffs and scrapes on the exterior. The worst of the cosmetic damage is a couple of deep scuffs located on the body of the pump underneath the main inlet flange. See 5th picture. This auction is for the pump itself only, I do not have the matching controller that goes along with it. During the time I had the pump stored. The inlet has always been covered by a blank plate to prevent any additional dust getting in. ... moreNevertheless, the interior of the pump is somewhat dirty, with a bunch of old dust on the topside of the pump rotor. See 4th picture) It will most likely need a little cleaning before being put back into service. Most everything does anyways) The pump rotor spins very freely. And there are no sounds or signs of anything rubbing or binding. The blades are in excellent shape with no signs of any damaging crashes. I never did get the chance to apply power to the motor. So I cannot say if it is fully operational. Thus I am listing it in the"for parts or not working" category to reflect that. However I do not see anything that would indicate it could not be put back in service. All in all this is a super-inexpensive way to get your hands on a turbo pump(especially one this big) And with a little work I think this old fellow could be back in business.
