The Big Thompson river is a year round fishery that is steep in gradient and made up largely of pocket water, it is a river with easy access. Highway 34 runs along most of the river ... morefrom Loveland, up to Estes Park. With its headwaters starting in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, it meanders through the town of Estes Park and down the scenic canyon along Hwy 34. Although the Park has many fly fishing opportunities, the majority of local fly fishers concentrate their efforts below Lake Estes and in the canyon. Most of the upper canyon is managed as 'catch and release' providing good numbers of quality trout. The majority of this stretch is public water managing to reduce crowding even in the heart of the season.

One cannot help but drift back to the days of the old west as you drive through the picturesque clay canyons of the St. Vrain.
The creek is home to lots of opportunistic brown trout and a good sustainable population of rainbow trout. The Vrain is probably best known for the summer time caddis hatch, with blanket hatches of fluttering bugs happening most every evening, making the creek a dry fly fisher’s paradise.
We are also fortunate that the creek tends to stay ice free throughout the year. So don’t let a little snow stop you, winter fly fishing can be fantastic on sunny days in January and February. The midge hatch makes for some great surface action and this is the best winter fly fishing trip close to Boulder.

The South Platte River is one of Colorado’s most famous and iconic rivers and for good reason, each stretch of this majestic tail water is full of brown and rainbow trout in prolific ... morenumbers. The river hosts an amazing assortment of bug life and impressive sized trout. Due to its close proximity to Denver, the South Platte receives a good deal of angling pressure, making it one of the most technical trout fisheries in the world. As the saying goes, “If you can catch trout in the South Platte’s Cheesman Canyon, you can catch trout anywhere in the world.” Originating approximately 20 miles west of the town of Lake George the main South Platte is formed from the junction of the South and Middle Forks. From here the river flows through central Denver, eventually joining the North Platte near the town of North Platte, Nebraska. The river itself is a major river of the American Midwest and the American Southwest/Mountain West.
But popularity can be a curse as the South Platte receives a lot of fishing pressure and rightly so due to trophy sized trout. The fish see lots of flies and that is why we hire guides that tie their own custom patterns to fool these wary trout. To be successful the fish must be sighted and fished too. Our guides have some of the best fish eyes in the business and can see trout in all light conditions.

Provo River is one of the best known fly fishing rivers in Western United States. It is only 20 minutes from Park City and 45 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. This Blue Ribbon River provides excellent fishing year-round. It originates in the high Uinta Mountains, and is divided into three distinct sections; the upper, the middle, and the lower. The three sections are separated by two reservoirs, the Jordanelle and Deer Creek. Because of these reservoirs the middle and lower sections of the Provo river are classic tail-water fisheries, where the upper is more of a free stone river. These tail-water sections are managed for trophy trout. The water is almost always clear and fishable, and the fish numbers are truly impressive. There are many access points along the 25 miles of river, so if you have any limitations this is a great choice. With its close proximity to Park City this river is ideal for half or full day trips.

We can help make room arrangements at Red Canyon Lodge, Flaming Gorge Lodge or supply tents for camping during your fly-fishing experience on the Green River.

LOCAL FISHING: There is good flyfishing 15-minutes out of Park City and even more within 2-hours. The Provo and Weber Rivers are very close, with several others east of Park City. You can flyfish any season on the scenic Provo River because it doesn’t freeze due to temperature control.

DESCHUTES FLY FISHING GUIDES & STEELHEAD GUIDES
Regulations & Fishing Methods: Lower Deschutes River regulations prohibit fishing from a floating device, which means that ... morewe wade fish exclusively. As well, the regulations only allow fishing with artificial lures and flies on the Lower Deschutes, so we do both. We primarily fly fish for trout, but we always have a couple of spinning rods along just in case the fish aren’t hitting the fly. We focus our Steelhead fishing efforts swinging flies with spey rods in morning and evening and use a combination of nymphing techniques, throwing lures and using side planers with plugs through the middle of the day.
Above Maupin (River Mile 52): The famous Deschutes Redside Trout are the focus of our efforts above Maupin from mid-April through September when Steelhead begin to show up in the 50-miles above Maupin. September and October provide an opportunity above Maupin for “combo” trips where we target both Redside Trout and Steelhead in the same trip. November and December can be some of the best Deschutes River Steelhead fishing of the year if you are tough enough to brave the cold weather!
Below Maupin (River Mile 52): Beginning in mid-July, when Steelhead start to enter the Mouth of the Deschutes, we focus our Steelheading efforts to the last 50-miles of the river, below Maupin, where the Deschutes meets the Columbia River. Trout are common in this section of the river as well, but the main focus of our attention are powerful and fresh Deschutes River Steelhead.
The Crooked River is a special resource, having a 100% native fish population, and is located just 40 minutes outside of Bend, Oregon. The Crooked River has an incredibly robust population ... moreof Redside Rainbow Trout, slightly smaller than those in the Lower Deschutes River, but still famous for their fight.

FLY FISHING ON THE CROOKED RIVER
The Crooked River is one of the state’s most popular spots. This small stream is known as a year round fishery and most of the time it lives up to ... morethat designation. It has the most prolific trout population of any stream in Central Oregon and lives up to it’s reputation as a very good fishery.
Spring, Summer and Fall often gives us amazing fishing opportunities with BWO’s, PMD’s, Caddis and Midges accounting for the very best fishing of the season. Nymph fishing with small zebra midges and micro mayfly nymphs is absolutely the best way to take trout and some really nice whitefish on the Crooked. Around the middle of May to the middle of June you should encounter some monster caddis hatches. In the fall add Mahogany Duns to the list of hatches and look for them in September and early October in pretty decent numbers.
Winter fishing is often good, there are good midge hatches to be found and drifting a zebra midge is hard to beat.
Scuds, Eggs and Prince Nymphs are often a really good bet for the off times of hatches or biological drift activity.
The Crooked River is best fished in the Tailwater section from Bowman Dam back downstream towards Prineville to Mile Marker 12. This 8 mile stretch of river is the best section of water to fly fish. There are also limited opportunities to fish the Crooked River near Smith Rock State Park and near Opal Springs.
FALL RIVER FLY FISHING GUIDED TRIPS AND CONDITIONS
The Fall River is one of my favorite places to fish! Maybe it’s because I am a Spring Creek Fanatic or because this is where I learned ... morehow to fly fish. It’s a 10 mile long Spring Creek and is a tributary to the Deschutes. While there are a few places that are private property the river is mostly open to the public. From the Headwaters, down through the campground, the horseshoe bend and the Fish Hatchery is all very accessible water with only one small piece of private property. From the Hatchery to the Bridge on road 4360 there is another section of private water with just a little public access above the bridge. From the Bridge down to the Falls is all good water. All of the water from the Headwaters to the Falls is open for year round fishing. Below the Falls is mostly public except the last little piece where it flows into the Deschutes. The area below the Falls down to the Deschutes is open in late-May and closes at the end of September.
The Fall River has diverse and prolific hatches. These include BWO’s, PMD’s, Green Drakes, Mahogany Duns, Yellow Sally’s, Midges and Caddis. Terrestrials are very hot here and Attractor dries can work miracles. Because there are so many lava ledges for the fish to hide under, you’ll need a selection of small, tungsten bead head nymphs. Streamer fishing on the Fall River can produce nice takes and truly exciting action.
Our drift boat trips to the McKenzie happen here! This is a long stretch of river with several put-in’s and take-out’s giving us the option of finding the perfect drift. While we are ... moreadvocating for this to become a Wild Trout only fishery, currently it is a mix of wild and stocked trout. On this float trip you will fish from the boat most of the time but there are also good wade fishing spots that we stop to cover the water. Season runs from last Saturday in April to October 31st.
Guiding On the Green River: I love the Green River and have been fishing it monthly for the last seven years. The emerald waters and amazing canyon atmosphere make it a place to remember ... moreeven if the fish are not cooperating. But that seldom is a problem with over 14,000 fish per mile from the dam to little hole. These fish are very healthy and stunningly beautiful. Making the Green River the ultimate destination for any angler to enjoy.
How Guiding works
To be a guide on the Green River you need hold a current river guide license issued by the state of Utah, and to be hired on by an outfitting company who holds a current river permit. There are some great company’s and good guides in the area. I currently guide out of Spinner Fall Guide Service and take all of my trips through this company.
Your Day On a Guided Trip
We meet at 7:30am or 8:30am in Dutch John, Utah. We go over conditions, gear, fly’s and what to expect for the day. You provide your rod, reel, leader, and I will provide fly’s and accessories we will use throughout the day.
We load up in a company vehicle that takes us down to the boat ramp.
We take the boat off the trailer and get or rods rigged up and start our float.
The Green River offers great fishing for a variety of techniques. Depending upon your preference we can fish drys, nymphs, dry dropper, or streamers. I am very open to fish any of these and will help you understand the skill needed for each of them. I will not force you to to fish a certain way, I know this is your trip and will help you achieve your expectations.
When the time is right we will pull the boat ashore and have a river side lunch that is often grilled chicken, brats, burgers, or sandwiches.
After lunch will will finish our float and with sore arms and new memories reach the boat ramp to end our float.
Our vehicle will be shuttled by a shuttle service and be ready for us at the ramp.
I will then load the boat on the trailer and will drive back to the meeting location in Dutch John.
Overall a full day guided trip is between 8-9 hours and everything is simplified for us to really focus on the fishing!
The Strawberry starts above Strawberry Reservoir and enters into Strawberry Reservoir. It leaves the Berry Patch and empties into Starvation Reservoir, then joins with the Duchesne ... moreRiver below the town of Duchesne and Becomes the Duchesne River. The sections I guide on are the “Wild Strawberry” from strawberry reservoir to Starvation, and Below Starvation Reservoir. Both are very different and offer a different reward to anglers.
The Wild Strawberry
Cascading down from Strawberry Reservoir the Wild Strawberry is home to beautiful mountain trout. Rainbow, Brown, and gorgeous cutthroat trout live in this little tail water and love large dry flys. Fishing season here is June till October according to snow levels. You will not find a prettier place to wet your line then this stretch of river.
Fish usually average 8-14 inch’s with fish up to 20 inches available. A pure dry dropper stream that is a blast to fish. When going here plan on leaving early to get a good section of stream to fish. The fish are very spooky and do not respond to pressure well.
Strawberry River: Below Starvation Reservoir
Being a Fly Fishing Guide you get to explore new areas to find large fish. No other place in Utah has larger Brown Trout on a consistent basis. This area Produces large fish. But beware. Many of anglers here reports and come expecting much only to get their butt kicked by these wary fish.
Sight fishing and stalking skills can be the difference between a 20 fish day and getting skunked. I will show you how to find these fish, how to approach them, what to use, and how to land a brown over 20 inches. With browns over 26″ being caught every year this area holds some true pigs.
I guide on this section of Strawberry River year round and can help you catch a large Brown Trout. It will take work and some learning, but you will not be disappointed with the results. Plan on catching 2-8 fish during the day, but at least one of those will be over 20 inch’s.
The Provo River is a great fishery located next to major cities. It is considered a Blue Ribbon fishery with good reason. Full of brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout it can be fished ... moreduring every season. It starts high up in the mighty Uinta Mountains and works its way down through two reservoirs and finally empties into Utah Lake. The river is broken into three sections namely the Upper, from the Uinta Mountains to Jordanelle Reservoir, the Middle, from Jordanelle Reservoir to Deer Creek Reservoir, and the Lower, from Deer Creek down to Utah Lake. I guide on the Middle and the Lower where fish counts are the highest.
The Middle Provo
Winding its way through beautiful Heber Valley the middle Provo is a great piece of trout water. After a river reconstruction done about 7 years ago the river has many access points and great holes to fish. The river is full of bug life which sustains a large population of Brown and Rainbow Trout. Amazing hatches of midges, and blue wing olives seem to bring every fish in the river to the surface.
The Lower Provo
Dumping out of Deer Creek Dam the lower Provo cascades its way through the impressive Provo Canyon. Huge limestone cliffs hang thousands of feet above you as large brown trout eagerly eat your fly. This is where I started learning how to fly fish. I have spent many days chasing these trout and have had much frustration and joy here. The lower Provo is much swifter then the middle section and offers great nymphing opportunities. The sow bug is the king when nymphing here and midges and mayfly nymphs work well. With seasonal hatches of midges, BWO, PMD, and a great caddis hatch fishing on top can be great as well.
Most fish average 12-17 inches in this section with fish over 20 possible. A 18 pound hog was caught out of this section 12 years ago. With the Lower Provo being only 10 minutes outside of Orem and Provo it gets lots of fishing pressure. I love to fish it in the fall through early spring to avoid the people hatch. In winter you can have whole sections to yourself and pick and choose where you want to fish. A real treat for putting up with cold hands for a few hours.
