White House Roof Letter Opener - Erected 1817 and Removed in 1927
This is your chance to own a truly one of a kind piece of American history. A letter opener made from the wood used on the roof of the White House that was erected in 1817 and removed in 1927. If you are interested in the history of the White House and the roof in particular. Please check out. This letter opener belonged to my grandfather whose initials are engraved on the back. I contacted the museum after my father passed to see if they were interested in my donating it to them. I was never sent a reply. There is a brass plaque(3"x3/4" held by two brass screws which reads"This Wood was part of the WHITE HOUSE ROOF ERECTED ABOUT 1817 AND REMOVED IN 1927" This letter opener measures approximately 11 inches in length. It is 1-1/3 wide at the plaque and almost 1/2 in depth. It looks to me that it was originally coated with ... morea shellac for protection. IT IS MUSEUM# 1967.0205.001 HERE IS ALSO AN EXCERPT FROM THE GREENSBORO HISTORY SITE: Albert Gallatin. A partner in the Albert Gallatin Company, purchased lots in Greensburgh in 1795. On a trip to Washinton, D.C. he met a group of German glass blowers who were heading to Kentucky to form their own company. He urged them to consider settling in Greensburgh. The group settled in New Geneva in 1790 and the plant operated there until 1805 when it moved to the northern section of Greensburgh, later called Old Glassworks. By 1807 the quality of Glassworks Glass was recognized as superior throughout the country. Old Glassworks did a booming ... morebusiness and prosperity filled the streets of Greensburgh. I just love the LOOK and feel of these old snowbirds! Just in case you don't need to keep the snow off of the roof right now- they can be mounted anyhere that would accomodate the bent over"lip" at the top- like on the railing of a deck. This listing is for 2 birds- made of cast iron, and each measuring 12 3/4" long, 4 3/4" widest, and the lip I'm talking about at the top is 7/8" long and flat, so it will lay on a flat surface. There's two screw mounting holes under the lip, and there's one more hole at the end of the"arm" that stick out- ooh- you could thread or hook something into that too- like a windchime or bird feeded- see, the wheels are turning! Each one weighs 1 1/4 lbs and they have a painted black finish through which you can see pits and valleys to the iron- they are oldoldold. You can see small spots of surface rust where the finish is worn- no holes or sharp edges, though- it's surface. They are in excellent solid and sturdy condition, though- no structural issues at all. Vintage Plastic Renwal No. 39 Convertible Car with working Roof and Trunk lid that lifts. Driver inside with steering wheel. 6 1/2" long. Expertly repaired cracks on each side of convertible top. Red trunk box was re-glued. Probably by my father, back in the day. Glue residue is visible inside the trunk, on the underside and a small spot on the blue fender. Spare tire is missing from this toy.

Here is an old Asian roof tile. This is an end piece with the medalion face on the end. There is an immortal riding on the back of an oversized rooster. The immortal appears to have been repaired at the neck during the production process. As the cracked area is under the glaze.
