Drake SPR-4 Radio Receiver AL-4 AM Loop Antenna *VERY SCARCE*
SquareTrade © AP6.0 This sale is for a very scarce Drake AL-4 loop antenna that was an accessory to compliment the SPR-4 receiver. The AL-4 provides reception from 150 to 1500 khz when plugged into the top of the SPR-4. Of course you may use any standard longwire for DXing on the longwave and mediumwave bands. But you will not be able to position such an antenna for specific direction to maximize gain or to null unwanted signals such as can be done with the AL-4. If you own a Drake SPR-4. Then you probably know how sensitive the receiver is and how well it can grab signals. You also likely know that the AL-4 is not commonly seen on Ebay. What you may not know is that the SPR-4 is an excellent DX receiver on the mediumwave(AM broadcast) band. I discovered this when I was a teenager and was able to tune KFI in Los Angeles while living ... morein a valley in central Penna. I sent to KFI and was able to get a QSL card for my contact. This was using my multiwave dipole that was neither directional nor resonant for 640 khz that KFI operates on and that broadcast was from one coast to the other. If you live in the USA, you will likely have never received the opposite coast even if you have been able to pick up overseas transmissions. Imagine what you can expect when using the AL-4 and how this loop antenna may allow you to maximize your reception on the LW and MW bands. The AL-4 is listed as scarce as I really see very few of them ever sold. I have sold about 30 of the SPR-4 receivers and only 2 of the AL-4 antennas. For those that may wonder how it operates. Your SPR-4 has a removeable plug on the top cover. Once you remove the plug in the center of the cover, you then can snap the AL-4 into position. There are no complicated setup procedures and the antenna is ready to use as soon as it is inserted into the SPR-4.
