If you're not going to be needing your edger, I suggest you treat it three or four times over a day or two; it'll improve your chances of getting it off. Use a rod. Such as a 12" socket extension or large Phillips screwdriver; wrap the top with a cloth to pad your hand(or. ouch! Insert into a hole in the pad. And bang it with a hammer to turn the pad counterclockwise. Once it begins to turn. Look carefully to see if it is actually loose(in which case, simply unscrew it and screw on the new one) If the shaft is turning with it, what you have done is loosened the pinion gear inside, rather than the pad. Not a disaster, but you will have to remove the gearbox cover. Line up the holes in the pad and the wall guard.
