Rusty Vintage LOG BOOM SPIKE Chain Logging Ship Boat MARITIME DECOR Nautical
This is a fantastic antique logging spike. That would be a great nautical decor item! I live on Puget Sound, and in the 1800s and 1900s, when loggers cut down many of our forests, they would chain together dozens or hundreds of logs in the water and haul them to the lumber mill. These spikes were driven into a log so that chains could be attached. This one measures about 6 3/8" long, shows plenty of character through it's rust, and a slight bend near tip, due to years of salt water and being beaten into logs with a hammer. Still quite solid! I know nothing about this other than it is old and has been in my(my daddy's) garage for years. A friend helped me with the name of the hook. I offer it as a 14 foot chain. But as you can see in the photo by the yardstick, it's close to 15 feet. The links are approx. 1 3/4" long X 1 3/8" wide and approx. 3/8" thick and the hook is about 4" long. It is kinda rusty. I realized after I brought it inside to box. That the(silver) hook was only held on with a nut and bolt so I removed it, but have included in case it's usable for something else. I just bought a scale:~) this was my first chance to weigh something ... moreother than a Disney pin and if scale is accurate. It weighs about 28 pounds. 5/8" Chain Connectors Shortener Hooks Hammerlok Lock Double Clevis Tow Rig Log
Up for bids is an assortment of 5/8" chain rigging connectors. I was collecting these when I had a lot of 5/8 chain to sell and all the chain is gone now. When joined together these parts make a great heavy duty 5/8 chain shortener. The 5/8 BTC hooks are hard to find any spec on but I did find they were made in the fifties by cooper industries USA. And they described them as 5/8" heavy duty industrial drop forged chain grab hooks. I believe they are new old stock. The last photo shows them before I applied the blue finish. The 2 double clevis connectors are new and I removed them from the package to show the chain shortener. They came in a 3 pack and I am keeping 1 for myself. You can find the specs on those on the stanley national website by item N830-311 and 3248BC. They show them as meeting grade 42 requirements and having a ... moreworking load limit of 11,000 lb. The 5/8 hammer lock connecter, thats not the brand name) was made in Sweden and I found the specs one time, the G-16-8 means 16mm(5/8 USA size) and the 8 is grade 8(close to our grade 80) showed a 15,500 lb working load limit. The hammer lock link is the only part that would be approved for over head lifting. The hooks are very heavy at over 4 lbs each. The whole assembly chain shortener weights 14 lb 11 oz and is about 22" long. Thanks for looking.
