This is a Sony programmable audio timer. And it's about 30 years old. It's from an era when not every component had a clock built in, and so this is essentially an audio-grade timer that you can program to provide AC power to two switched outlets. This allows you to turn on certain outlets at whatever time of day you like. I know what you're thinking- this is the same thing I can buy at Walmart for $4.99, right? Well, functionally, yes. However, this is designed for audio equipment and therefore the power it gives is much cleaner, and the component is designed to blend in with a rack mounted system. Needless to say, most mid-range enthusiast gear does not have built-in clocks and such, and this component allows that functionality.
