Vintage ca1965 Frigidaire Space Age Advertising Display Refrigerator Old Store
Vintage ca.1965 Frigidaire Power Capsule Space Age Display I have done a fair amount of research on this display and could not find any mention of it anywhere. I contacted General Motors Archives and a couple of Libraries that have Frigidaire collections and found nothing but advertisements and brochures. I believe it could be a on-off. Made for a trade show or possibly 1965 World's Fair but this is just a guess. The sphere measures 17" in diameter at its widest point and display is 25½" high. It contains a mockup of their Space Age compressor motor with an astronaut suspended on each side. It lights up and blinks(see video below) Original'Winker' power cord. I only lightly cleaned it and put 3 new small rubber feet on stand. The rest is all original. Plastic sphere has some light scuffs and rub marks, there is ... morea small 1" crack at the bulb access hole in back. What looks like dirt or discoloring on the outer band of the sphere is actually gold paint. This has to be extremely rare if not unique. GM told me the Space Age Power Capsule came out in the 1966 refrigerators. I have included 3 photos from various magazine advertisements(not included) that show a very similar clear plastic sphere with motor inside. I am pretty sure the first large 2 page advertisement is from the November 19. 1965 issue of Life Magazine. So, the ads show a clear sphere in 1965 and that is how I dated it.
