FEEDBACK: The leaf arrived this morning in great condition! And as I write. I'm basking in the glow of having handled- and now I own! such a wonderful piece of printing history. Thanks again for listing this at a price which was within striking distance of a workingman. During the decade that the Frenchman Nicolaus Jenson(b. ca. 1420- d. after 1482) was printing in Venice. He produced what are commonly regarded as the most beautifully-printed books of the incunable period(1450-1500) Jenson has been described as the first non-German printer we know. His"antiqua" roman type was modelled on the hand favored by the Renaissance humanists who emphasized the study of ancient Latin texts. Jenson's version of antiqua(old-style) roman type, however, shows development beyond the sheer imitation of handwriting. Jenson's own work ... morecontinues to inspire imitation including William Morris's 1890 Golden type, and Bruce Rogers' Oxford Lectern Bible, as well as many other fonts Specifically. Morris worked with Jenson's printing of Pliny's Historia Naturalis(Venice, 1476) the leaf here offered. This leaf is from the Italian translation of Pliny. It was published in an edition of 1025 copies the same year as the Latin, with the same types. While Jenson's roman type was not the first, most think it is by far, the best. His type has great clarity and liveliness. And at the same time an element of divine repose. The Jenson types are part of the same Renaissance glory that gave the world the supremely beautiful written letters of the humanistic scribes. Joseph Blumenthal. Art of the Printed Book. This type has been acclaimed as the finest that has ever been made.
