PAIR OF VARNISH SILVERED GLASS TIE BACKS OR BOSTON SANDWICH MT WASHINGTON
Listed for purchase are an EXTREMELY RARE PAIR of Silvered glass Tie Backs of rare emerald Green glass cut back to silver. They measure approximately 2 + ¼ inches tall without the screw by 2 inches across. These Tiebacks were either made by E. Varnish or Hale Thomson who held the patents for Silvered glass in 1849 while Whitefriars was the producer of the Glass in England or by the Boston& Sandwich or the Mount Washington Glass Company here in America. I dare not disassemble the silver plated collar and screw to see if the base has the E Varnish or Hale Thomson glass wafer. The Tie Backs are Circa 1850 to 1870 and are as all this glass was and is Spectacularly Beautiful. This is for(2) smaller pressed glass bowls. Probalby from a Bridge Set, in amber glass in a sort of Sandwich design. I am guessing they are from the 1960's to mid-1970's. The diamond is 4.75" long and the heart is 3.75" long. They are in good condition, there is an odd scallop at one end of the diamond but it is smooth and was made that way. Ohio, is this lovely souvenir plate that was etched"World's Fair 1934" The world's fair located in Chicago in 1933 and 1934 was named"A Century of Progress International Exposition" T he dealer that I purchased the plate is nearly sufficiently old to have been there but not quite. He does specialize in world's fair memorabilia and advised that the etching was consistent with what he has seen. H e mentioned that his parents lived in Chicago and Springfield. Illinois, prior to his arrival in this world. His father had been an FBI agent and participated in the hunt for a number of notorious 1930's era bank robbers. They did visit the fair but this plate does not come from ... morethem. T he plate is red orange glass in a"Sandwich" Pattern made by Indiana Glass. I assume that Indiana Glass may have had a booth making glassware at the fair and sold these etched plates. The company started to make this"red" color in their Sandwich pattern in 1933. T he plate is 8 1/4 inches wide. Condition: T he plate has one small 1/8 inch long but shallow chip and one tiny rough spot on the plates rim. Otherwise. This plate that is about to entered into it's ninth decade is free of damage except for the small chip and rough spot on the rim. I assume that the original owner/buyer passed the dish on to the next generation of family who packed it away for 60 or 70 years and only recently has been unearth to see the"light of day" in many a moon. This sale is for a LOT of 10 vintage airbrushed sectioned Syracuse China in the blue and white pattern of sailboats under clouds. On February 5th. I looked at 62 pages on Ebay of vintage Syracuse China with 50 images on each page and this particular plate and pattern were not found. Sectioned plates were almost exclusively used by restaurants for sandwiches or grilled foods with side dishes on the same plate. The airbrushing and stenciling patterns are midcentury and highly collectible. Due to the gloss glaze on the plates. I had to lower the light to reduce flash reflections from the surface. Each plate is 9 1/ 2 inches in diameter. The individual sections are approximately 4 inches long by 3 inches wide. I lived in upstate New York for approximately 20 years; the Syracuse China Outlet was 15 miles from my home. It was always so busy with ... morepeople buying china that they had 2 parking attendants helping to direct traffic around the Outlet. You could buy regular china sets for your home. Perfect home/restaurant china sets but the major product was china with small imperfections in the glaze. Customers flocked to these imperfect pieces in droves. Examining each piece of their pattern for the least imperfections. The price for the china with imperfections in the glaze was ridiculously low. Big dinner plates were sold for a quarter. Smaller pieces for a dime. Many newly wed couples selected 1 or 2 sets for a fraction of what they would cost in a store. I was a frequent buyer as well. With 2 small children keeping me busy. The fronts have some very small glaze irregularities as well but not as much as the backs. They would make a wonderful luncheon or dinner set for a patio. Boat, sea food or barbeque party. The Straight Worchester pattern was made by The Boston& Sandwich Glass Co. of Sandwich. MA circa 1860's. This flint glass Flip or Tumbler is 4-1/4 inches tall and 3-5/8 inches in diameter at the rim. The foot is 2-5/8 inches in diameter and has a ground and polished pontil mark. The glass is flint and is very clear. Here is a wonderful mid 1800s lacy period. Flint glass cup plate manufactured by Boston and Sandwich. The cup plate is credited to Boston and Sandwich because of fragments found at the glass manufacturing site. This cup plate can be found in the book"American Glass" by Geo. P and Helen McKearnin, copyright 1948, plate 187, text pages 371-377. According to the McKearnins, this cup plate was one of 100 best cup plates featured in"The Magazine Antiques" October 1937. This is a 6 1/4" wide sandwich or dessert plate with a cottage and a stone bridge over a river. The back says"N Nasco" inside a wreath below that"Hand Painted Lakeview JAPAN" It is in excellent condition with no cracks(slight crazing only seen on the back: see second picture) and very very light scratches on the front that can only be seen if you tilt it carefully in the light and 1 tiny pinpoint chip on the rim that wouldn't show up on a picture(just like to be as totally accurate as possible so you know exactly what you are buying! This is very pretty plate as a display piece or to use. I have about 10 other various plates listed at this time so please take a minute to check them out also.
