This is a used Superior Electric Powerstat Model 116 Variac AutoTransformer Variable Power Supply. It also has a Cenco(Central Scientific) label on it and was likely sold as an educational device. It is rated at 7.5 amps. It has a 2-prong cord and outlet. This unit tested as working and voltages measure with digital volt meter from 0 to 145V. It is in very good condition with normal wear. It has some very minor scratches and marks. The cap for the fuse is missing also. There is one shown in the pictures but I borrowed that from another unit for testing. It is a bayonet style fuse holder and I have been unable to find a local resource that has them. My partner and I have recently acquired the stock of a recently closed radio. Here is a very nice big knob- roughly 3 inches in diameter. It has a 3/8 inch shaft. This is PERFECT for a big variac. Or something else that needs a good big of torque to turn. Japanese made Micronta 500W VARIAC 0~140V 5 AMP-great quality-guaranteed good
For sale is a good sized VariAC. A Japanese OEM produced Micronta-Radio Shack 5A, 0-140VAC unit with fuse, on/off switch and one outlet. Other than being dusty, the only thing to note is that there is a small dent in the cage that doesn't alter function, or degrade the mechanical integrity of the unit. I lubricated the brush/coils contact with Caig and some purpose made grease(made for electrical uses) The movement is smooth. Nice unit that will last essentially forever unless you abuse it. Or use is 8 hours a day repairing old equipment. I have one on my bench made in the'50s that still feels new. You really need this Variac if you run all-original tube equipment. When classic equipment. Like McIntosh and Marantz was made, most houses had 110-115 volts at the wall. Now it's 125 volts in a lot of places. That doesn't sound ... morelike much, but a capacitor that had a safety margin of 10 volts, is now running well over its rated voltage, and destruction is nigh upon your amp. If you buy old equipment. Any old equipment, that has been off for more than a few years, you should really use a Variac to warm it up. The electrolytics from the'70s and'80s are really touchy in solid state designs. They are more prone to failure than the high voltage electrolytics in tube gear. Unit does weigh a substantial amount for something slightly larger than a grapefruit. 8 lbs shipping weight. Satisfaction is guaranteed. It will work. If it doesn't. I'll be shocked, SHOCKED! A local guy has offered $250 + with local pickup I could skip building a crate, but again I'm holding out for $300 each. Originally part of a stack. The nameplate data may require some interpretation to apply to one unit. Weighs about 90 lbs and fits in crate 18 x 18 x 10 Shipping within the USA at actual cost + $50 for me to build the crate- I don't make any money on that and as you know eBay will charge me 10% of whatever the shipping cost is.
