Unusual Vintage 5320 PROTO 5/8" Deep Socket 12 Point with Crossbar Hole& GREEK Lambda Ever since I discovered this especially marked Proto socket in the lot of tools I purchased to resell a couple of weeks ago I have been trying to determine the reason for this tool to have such a marking. And I have another similarly marked socket offered in another listing- please visit my eBay store- The B4 Zone- to check it out. But I haven't been able to nail down a reason or purpose. The 3/8" dia. through holes are for a crossbar which suggest these where manufactured about 50 years ago when it was very common for deep socket sets to have through holes in all and include the cross bar with the set. The special markings in these sockets are to the right after the stamp for fractional size in inches. This one. I have had a couple of bright fellows suggest that it's a custom made tool manufactured to special tolerance by Proto for the United States Air Force. But I have no proof of that. This unusual 12 point deep socket is in very good to near new condition except for where the previous owner has very lightly engraved his two initials. It is 3-1/4" tall.
