Since DLT is a standard tape format, I'm sure this has very good support under Linux as well. This drive is basically a Quantum DLT7000 drive with firmware from Digital that reports itself as a TZ89N, as was the practice back in the day. This tape drive would be natively ... morerecognized in most Digital or Compaq AlphaServers also. Please note: This unit is SCSI Single Ended. Which was typically used internally to servers, or in table top units. If you have a tape library or changer, you will probably want a SCSI Differential version designed for that changer, which usually uses higher voltages designed for longer cables. This should ONLY connect to SCSI adapters with"SE" Single Ended" or"LVD" designations. Connecting it to an adapter with a"Diff" or"Differential" indicator will DAMAGE this drive! Differential tape drives were usually used in tape libraries and changers. This is NOT a library or changer drive! This is what we had to remember back in the 1990's when SCSI was king! So you can copy tapes, or record from the radio or other external source. It has a built-in microphone and microphone jack, auxiliary input jack, and headphone jack. It looks good and sounds good. The antenna is nice and straight. We tried the radio and got very good reception here in the boonies where we live. Up for consideration is a vintage Panasonic RQ-2108 portable cassette player/recorder. Includes 3 new/unopened TDK D90 blank cassettes. Cosmetically the housing shows a handful of minor nicks and scratches from storage and use/handling. Plastic cassette door shows faint swirl marks from cleaning. A battery has leaked at some point which corroded the contacts and stained the plastic inside and around the outside edges of the battery compartment. Power cord is included and in excellent condition. And the machine still works with batteries. Overall I'd give it a 6 out of 10 cosmetically for the rust stains on the bottom- the top and sides look very good considering. This piece is completely unmarked except on the brass edge it says"50 FT" the color I believe was green. But the piece has suffered some color loss.The cloth tape inside is really in good condition. The first 10" is dirty but readable. The rest is really beautiful and the whole thing has NO FRAYS. The winder works perfectly and the end loop is in good condition and attached tightly. Marantz PMD222. It does work. But you can hear a "squeak" as the tape plays.
This was my backup PMD222. I bought it used and it works fine EXCEPT there is that blasted squeak as the tape plays- like once a second. Over and over and over again. I am selling this as-is. If you know how to lubricate the drive. This might the the machine for you. Otherwise lots of good parts. If you know about mono cassette recorders. Then you already realize this is the hands down best machine made. I still use my main one from time to time. Great sound and easy to use. Perfect for rehearsing.
