This is a very interesting antique commercial canned goods canning tool. It was made by Burpee Can Sealer Co.Chicago. Illinois and is named"The Quick Change Self Sealer" It can be used for size No.2, and 3 cans. When the wooden handle crank is turned, it crimps the lid to the can. It has size#3 and# 2 tops on it now and can be switched to use either size on the self sealer. It has mounting clamps at the bottom for mounting to table or bench. It is made of a heavy metal. The crank turns freely. The base where the can rests needs more washers to build up on the peg. We believe it dates from the 1930's. It is in very good working condition. We have other lids,cans and sealers that will be listed on later E-bay auctions.

Wax sealers were the primary canning jars before glass became popular. A tin lid fit into the groove and molten wax was poured into the groove. As the wax cooled. It hardened and formed a seal. This is how the term wax sealer originated. The height is almost 5 5/8" It is 4 1/2" in diameter at the top and 4 1/2" in diameter at the bottom. There are several chips around the top edge, but none affect the sealing groove. There is one chip on the bottom edge. For your consideration is a hand turned wax sealer with a one gallon capacity. It uses a lid that measures 3 1/4" It is salt glazed. A tin lid was set into the groove and molten wax was poured over it; as the wax cooled it hardened. The hard wax formed a seal and that is how the name wax sealer came to be and they were the primary canning jar before glass became popular. The height is 8 7/8" and the bottom is 7 1/4" in diameter. Vintage National Automatic Hand Crank Can Sealer Home Canner Canning
14 years ago. My mother-in-law came to live with us. Recently widowed, she left her house as it was, came to Oregon and said she was never going back home. We told her we would pack her house up, pack EVERYTHING, and bring here for her to sort through at her pleasure. Her house was much like a museum. She was an avid and well known antique dealer and collector in Los Angeles in the mid to later 1900's. We moved over 700 boxes of items from her house. Along with many pieces of furniture. 1 of her pieces has been on the Antique Road Show. I built a 7000 sq. foot building to accommodate all her collections. She never opened a box. She died about 7 years ago. And we have just begun the process of going through the boxes ourselves. It is an arduous process. Some items will go to concession dealers. Some are given away, some things donated, ... moresome are kept and some things are offered here. I used to write a bit of the history at the beginning of each ad. I have decided to write this, and when a bit of provenance fits, I will include this introduction. These items were collected many years ago by a very sweet and knowledgeable lady. Wish she was here to tell me about each item we offer, but, I am on my own, and will do my best to describe. This is a National can sealer. It is vintage. But I am unsure of the age. I have never used this, I do not know how it works. We unpacked it the other day, we did not know what it even was, other than heavy and odd looking. A quick Google search and I can now call it what it is. The sealer was packed as it is shown in the pictures. What is in the pictures is what will be sent. Because I have no experience with sealing cans. Or have never seen one operate, I am offering the sealer"as is" meaning it is what you see.
