For your consideration is a wax sealer canning jar of the one quart size that was manufactured by Red Wing Stoneware Company of Red Wing. Minnesota. To seal a wax sealer canning jar, a tin lid was placed in the groove on top; molten wax was poured around the edge of the tin lid. As the wax cooled it hardened, forming a seal; thus the name wax sealer. Red Wing Stoneware Company began production in 1877; in 1906 Red Wing Stoneware merged with Minnesota Stoneware Company. The merger formed Red Wing Union Stoneware Company. In 1899 another type of stoneware canning jar produced in Red Wing received a patent. These facts mean this wax sealer could not have been produced before 1877 and after 1906 and probably not after 1899. We are listing today for your consideration a lovely Antique 19th Century Stoneware Saltglazed Cobalt Blue Star Decorated Wax Sealer Jar or Jug. This jug is in Excellent Condition with some very minimal wear to the top. The top has a few very shallow chips that are very smooth. There are no other chips. Cracks, and or repairs. We guarantee 100% you will be more than happy with the exceptional condition of this piece. The jug measures 10 1/2" tall x 7" wide x 3 3/4" the outside of the top rim x 2" the inside of the top rim x 6 1/2" at the base and weighs approximately 7lb 1oz. The jug has a wonderful applied handle with a little bit of cobalt blue at the top of the handle. There is a center design of 1 large star with 3 smaller stars above it and 3 smaller stars below it. The inside rim and inside of the crock has ... morea brown or light albany glaze to it. We believe this piece dates from the mid 1800's.
