Copper Laboratory Sieve - Michigan Mining Equipment - Science Collectible
This is a historic piece of lab testing equipment. The set consists of three parts all of which are of"Copper" construction. There is a copper cylindrical container that appears to be a little bit larger than Quart size. There is the number"5" stamped into the metal on the upper portion. This container is close to 8 inches tall and 4 3/4 inches in diameter. The sieve apparatus itself is made up of two parts. Both made of copper. The sieve measures approximately 6 inches in diameter and is 3 inches tall. The bottom is fitted with a screen or sieve that has circular openings of between 1/16 to 1/32" in diameter. This sieve fits into the bottom copper receiver. The receiver is approximately 8 1/8 inches in diameter and it 3 inches tall. The upper rim of the receiver has a 1 inch protruding inward-flat lip around the ... moreentire circumference. There is a cylindrical extension port of 1/2 inch in diameter and 1/2 inch in height that appears to used to attach a hose to. This bottom receiver might have been used as a water reservoir to assist in screening mineral samples. In raised letters on the outer surface of this piece are the words: Central Scientific Company- Chicago. This equipment was used in a materials lab located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; also know as Michigan's Copper Country. The part with the lens is a plastic. And the base is a metal. The magnifiers provides a good degree of magnification. T he focal length can be adjusted by a screw thread mechanism in the lens part. These magnifiers are approximately 2 inches tall and 2 inches in diameter. The lenses are good condition and provide very good magnification. As you can see by the pictures. This item is a medal issued to commemorate the life and career of Louis Pasteur. The obverse features the image of Pasteur. With his name at the top and the dates of his birth and death at the bottom(1822-1895) The reverse shows the types of curved-neck flasks that Pasteur used to demonstrate the germ theory. Around the rim on this side are the words PIONEERED THE GERM THEORY OF DISEASE. There is a hole for suspension that appears to be original. The medal measures approximately 1-3/8" diameter. And it appears to be composed of bronze that originally had a gilt surface(still showing in places) The edge is plain(not reeded) The medal is in very good condition. With no wear or damage but with uneven coloration- as seen in the photos. Most of the medal has dark toning, but there are areas(such as part of the reverse) where the original ... moregold-toned finish remains. They had several of these in all with minor problems, and I bought this on the understanding that it the power indicator wasn't lighting up, but heated up on testing and seemed otherwise to be fine. To cut a long story short. The first time I went to use it was about 3 months after the purchase date. Plugged it in. Switched it on, and immediately tripped the mains circuit. Unfortunately. I had to source a replacement oven immediately as it was needed. I have no real knowledge of electronics. But I come across the occasional electrical problem I feel comfortable having a go at. Not this. Anything drawing mains power needs to be treated with the upmost respect. Anything that trips a mains ... morecircuit breaker is potentially lethally dangerous.
