Very Rare - Civil War era Signal Lantern, as the one found in the CS Hunley Sub
Civil War Signal Lantern. It is made of tole tin and measures 8” high. With the diameter at the base being 3 1/2" There are two folding wire carrying handles on the back. It has a very thick glass lens on the swinging front door which would magnify the light from the flame. There is a near identical example of this lantern which was recovered inside the Confederate Submarine“H.L. Hunley” see pictures) The concreted lantern was removed by archaeologists and x-rayed(see pictures) It is said that this was possibly the one the crew used to signal that it sank the USS Housatonic on February 17 th. 1864. Another identified example of this type of lantern is in The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia. By Francis Lord(see pictures) The only difference is that one has a single canopy. Pair Vintage 1950s German Army Green Kerosene Signal Lanterns Lights
Up for sale are two(2) Germany Army green signal lanterns/ lights. Which we think are from the 1950s. Sold condition- as found in Dad's garage. Where he got them, we have no idea. They measure about 10 inches tall and 4 1/2 x 5 inches square unopened. Each lantern has 2 windows and a door which opens. To set it up, open the windows and insert the lenses and arrows. One side would project the arrow signals and the other side would have a green or red lens. The green lenses are attached to the windows. Each lantern has 4 red lenses(so there are a total of 8 red lenses) which are stored on the outside of the lantern in slots on each side. Two of the red lens are cracked. Each lantern has 6 signal arrows(so there are a total of 12 signal arrows) two#1s, one#2, two#3, and one#4, which are stored on the inside of the door. It has a kerosene ... moreburner, which removes to add the kerosene. To remove the kerosene light, pull on the green knob on the top, which will raise a ring around the kerosene burner. The kerosene light will then slide out of the lantern. Its a bit finicky as these are vintage lights and need a bit of TLC to make everything slide easily. There is a carrying handle. We have not tested them to see if they work. They both show signs of use- paint scratches, rust spots, etc. One is a bit dirty and greasy, and we will clean that up a bit as best we can before shipping. If you have any questions, please ask.
