Reflectometer detector and display meter 12 Watt range Bendix / RCA RF
This combination of a Bendix model 517.012(this is an RCA part number) and a Weston 100uA full scale meter were used to monitor the input RF dirve signal to an RCA BTF-40 FM transmitter. The BTF-40 is two(2) BTF-20 transmitters operation in paralell. The input to the BTF-40 required a precise impedance match with the RF signal source. Commonly called the exciter. To monitor this match, the Bendix directional coupler was in line with a rejection load of 50 Ohms, as a part of the RF divider that was connected to the RF boost amplifier, called the Intermediate Power Amplifier(IPA) As the tuning was adjusted, the engineer would observe the reject load power and make the adjustments for a minimum of reject load dissapation. This combination of RF detector and meter are rated for a maximum of Twelve(12) Watts of power. The RF voltage passing through ... morethe Bendix directional coupler is rectified by a small RF signal diode. A 1N218 in this case, and is then routed to the Weston meter to indicate the power level of the detected signal. A very important element of this combination is shown in the next to last picture. This is a view of the interior of the connector for the Weston meter and appears to be a simple phoenelic disc supporting the center conductor contact. In fact, this is a ceramic insulated capacitor typically measuring 500pF for the purpose of bypassing to ground any exteraneous RF that would interfear with an accurate meter response. This is one of the first components I would examine when confronted with irratic RF power output meter indicatons; a cracked bypass capacitor because someone wrenched the connector down too far. These bypass capacitors are extremely difficult to find, much less install into the connector shell. The typical meters used by Western Electric. RCA, GE and Westinghouse were black face with white numberals and pointers which made it easier for the engineer to see the indicated malues presented by the meter. This offering is for a Bird ThruLine watt meter system comprising the display head. Model#4217-037, the ThruLine sample assembly, model#4600-000 and two(2) RF sampler plug-in's. One slug is rated for 25,000 Watts and the second is rated for 1,000 Watts. The ThruLine assemble is a SINGLE PORT model and is mated with the display head. I added the two bands of Scotch 33 electrical tape to the ThruLine assemble to allow temperature measurements with an InfraRed temperature sensor because the silver plating of the assembly would cause the heat readings to fluctuate greatly.
