LPB-1 Copy Hand Built Linear Power Booster Pedal Vintage Design & Components
I hand-build a number of small batch and‘one-off’ runs of booster and fuzz pedals for local musicians and up for auction is one of my take-offs of the E/H LPB-1(Linear Power Booster) guitar pedal. This particular pedal is one of my demo models that I decided to sell off at reduced cost- other projects are waiting. The original pedal this one was reversed engineered from has always been one of my personal favorites. The unit was one of the more unusual PNP(Positive Ground) models– the early models were built with either NPN or PNP transistors. With a slight resistance change to bias the circuit properly] This pedal is fully functional and only requires a 9 volt battery(not supplied) It’s a very warm sounding pedal. Not to mention loud. I wire the pedal the same way the vintage models were wired– point-to-point. Suspended from terminals(no ... morePC board) The differences being the enclosure is a Hammond box and therefore much stronger than the originals and features the double-jack setup(no male plug) This demo also features the D.P.D.T. slide switch like the vintage original, but is only wired to switch the battery on and off. The switch on the originals did double-duty as battery on/off and pedal bypass. This bypass only switched the outputs and was not at all a‘true-bypass’ allowing for a loud‘pop’ being audible during the switching. The demo is wired so that the circuit(boost mode) is constantly‘on’ You could always wire a bypass like that described above(I’ll include instructions) or try to fit a true-bypass switch into the enclosure, which might be a tight fit. If you’ve been searching for one of the vintage units you know most end well into the $100 range. And like me. You probably find the new units don’t have the sound you’re looking for. Genuine Apple designed and manufactured speaker set. Minus the power supply. I found these at a ham radio swap meet, and they were just too pretty to leave them there. The cases are in remarkably clean condition, with no dings, chips, scratches, yellowing from the sunshine, labels, writing, engraving, missing feet, odors, or other unpleasantness. You can tell that they did not sit near a window because the color is consistent front to back and top to bottom. The grilles are likewise undented and clean. The terminals are tight, and the RCA connectors are shiny. There is one tiny spot of discoloration at the upper left corner of one of them(see photos) ... moreIt did not come off with a damp. Soapy sponge, and I did not escalate to a more aggressive cleaner. You may figure out how to get it off, but don't assume so. Because I do not have the correct power supply. I could not test these. It requires a non-standard connector(golly, so unlike Apple to use a non-standard connector) so you will have to hunt down the right supply. Although I couldn't test the powered part, I did hook up the passive(satellite) speaker, and it sounded fine, with no rattling or buzzing. A good sign. Amplifier sold for about $1300 when new. Amplifier is in excellent to near mint COSMETIC condition. However. It does not power on. It operated flawlessly for me but about 2 weeks ago the amplifier shut down and will not power up. When plugged in the power LED blinks every few seconds. I opened up the unit and I cannot find any scorched parts on the circuit boards nor did the internal fuses appear to blow. In fact, the circuit boards look almost pristine. It may be a simple fix or something more involved to repair. If you know a good audio equipment repair technician this amp could be a steal for you.
