Blue Photomultiplier Tube Reference Lamp Self Excited Geiger Counter Test Source
This is a small reference source for a spectrophotometer. It is unusual in that it is self powered. And even more so that the color is a violet blue peaking near 450nm. It is not really bright, but is great for callibrating colorimeters, i imagine the output wavelength and power is very stable since it uses no electricity. It was used with an interference filter originally that selected 450nm. The tube is tiny measuring about 2mm diameter by 10mm long. The wavelength output range as tested is from 422nm to about 493nm, but most of the energy is near 450nm. I also tested this with my Ludlum 3 Geiger Counter and it verified this item is mildly radioactive making about 900 CPM with my with pancake probe, hardly dangerous, but enough to use as a check source. As with the voltage control turned all the way up it is just under 1000V indicated(shows 995 but was showing 998 before I flipped the Local/Remote switch or something like that) I dialed it down to an indicated 440+ volts(actually the voltage out appears to be all negative) to protect my VOM and as you can see it is showing a similar voltage output.
