This is a used Keuffel& Esser transit level model KE-2e# 623604. In the original carrying case with leather locking strap. It was made in Western Germany. It seems to be in good working order, I tried the focus and it works. The shape of the two piece case is like a bomb. And the transit locks into the case for transport. Keuffel & Esser Stadia Surveying Slide Rule c.1913 model 4100 Mahogany
A very nice Keuffel& Esser Co Stadia Slide Rule in the 10 inch size. This is model number 4100 from 1912-1914. It appears in the 1913 catalog(last photo) but the the 1912 and 1914 catalogs aren't available so I don't know if they were made those years or not. The difference between this one and the earlier ones is that this has a metal framed cursor with glass. The cursor is stamped on the top"KUEFFEL&ESSER NEW YORK" and appears to be made out of aluminum. The metal is a little dirty. I didn't try to clean it. The glass is clear and the line is sharp. The frame of the slide rule is mahogany, with a groove cut on the top and bottom for the cursor to ride on. The scales appear to be celluloid. The scales are in great condition, legible and crisp but with some browning, I did not attempt to clean them. The back ... moreside of the slide has another scale which is also crisp but slightly browned. Behind the slide is an inscription"Pat June 8, 1900" On the back of the slide are instructions for use and three slotted screws. Someone has neatly written the initials E.T. at one end of the back instruction sign. The end of the slide and the frame have the number 72 stamped into the mahogany which I believe is a lot number. There is no serial number. I do not have the case. I believe this is extremely rare. Apart from the catalog scans, I can't find any photos of a model 4100 with a metal frame cursor. Rule is in really nice condition, slides easily, glass bears some scratches but no cracks. The only flaw is an approx. 1/4" piece of one of the polymer ruled edges is broken off and missing(photo 6) Black leather case is in fantastic condition for its age, and the flap closure is still supple. The serial number corresponds with a date of about 1933. Don't know much about them. Or how they work, but it seems to all be there and working. The serial number places it as a 1933 instrument. The Condition of the transit looks good, it seems to work, the levels work with no cracks in the glass that I found. Glass is clear. That's as much as I know about testing it. I know nothing about these things. It is in the original box with the same serial number as the transit. The box has some wear. The box still has the original shipping labels. The transit needs to be cleaned. I am not qualified to work on transits so I have not attempted to clean it other ... morethan a light dusting. There is no tripod with this instrument. This 20-inch mahogany one-sided slide rule is coated with white celluloid. The top edge is beveled and has a simply divided scale 20 inches long that is divided to sixteenths of an inch. The base has A. D, and K scales. One side of the slide has B, CI, and C scales; S, L, and T scales are on the other side. The A and B scales are divided logarithmically from 1 to 10 twice in the usual manner. The C and D scales are divided logarithmically once from 1 to 10 in the length of the scales in the usual manner. The CI scale is divided logarithmically from 1 to 10 the length of the scale, going in the opposite direction from the other scales. The K scale is divided logarithmically three times in the length of the scale, for use in finding cubes and cube roots. The S scale gives the sines of angles from less than 40 minutes to 90 degrees.
