I was told it was probably made for a lady or teenager as a writing or study desk. I was never clear on the age until I did a web-search and came across the article below. This is an excerpt from the webpage which explains a bit about the maker of this piece: Townshend of Vermont antiqueshoppefl.com/archives/ftaylor/qa71.htm) As seen in The Antique Shoppe Newspaper, April 2007. The label in the drawer reads"Townshend" with an"h" Not Townsend. That opened up a whole new area of exploration since there is a town in Vermont named"Townshend" that was founded in the 1700's. The history of Townshend. Vermont began in 1753 with ... morea charter from King George II and is an interesting tale but not for here. While researching Townshend, Vermont I came across a reference to Townshend Furniture Company. A little further digging turned up an address and phone number for the company and within a few minutes I was talking to Steve Lott who, along with his wife Susie, currently owns Townshend Furniture Company on RT 30 in Townshend, Vermont. Steve told me the company was founded after World War II by a veteran who had an interest in mostly maple Colonial Revival furniture which was produced by the company until the 1960's when it was purchased by Steve's family. Steve confirmed that the paper label found in the drawer of the drop front desk was indeed from his company and was used by his predecessor in the 1950's and 1960's but is no longer in use. The chair measures 13.75 by 14.5 and just over 28 inches tall. The chair and the desk are both adjustable. I am also willing to sell the pieces individually. Please contact me regarding either option. This furniture is from the 1960's and has the original paint and finish. It is a light sage green color. It has the original brass hardware. Dovetailed wood drawers. With glides underneath. I would say this is in good condition. Up close it definitely shows some wear and tear with some knicks and missing paint. However. I personally believe it gives it that antique/shabby chic look. Of course, you could sand it down and repaint it if you prefer a newer and more modern look. Offered for sale is a Beautiful Ethan Allen Green Leather'Rousseau Desk Chair' This chair features a heavy five leg swivel base and beautiful green leather upholstery on the front and back of the chair. There is a pretty carved rose at the very center top and leather on the armrests as well. The prior owner chose to paint the wood an off-white color. Shabby chic, and the chair is factory distressed. The chair measures 25" wide x 28" deep x 40" high. The seat width is 21 1/2" between the arms and 19 1/2" deep. The chair is very heavy and comfortable. The base allows you to swivel and rock. The chair is found on page#186 of the 96th edition Ethan Allen Treasury of American Home Interiors catalog. The chair looks to have been made in the mid- 90's and would have retailed around $1000 or more. The Ethan Allen ... moretag is located on the bottom of the seat cushion. Overall the leather is in fantastic condition with only a few small scuffs and a small scratch that I found on the seat(see pics#10. 11) The wood is factory distressed. Ethan Allen manufactures high quality investment grade furniture that can be passed down through generations. This desk chair is a wonderful example of their fine craftsmanship.
