So what’s so great about this old clunker you ask? Yes. The E-200D is an old clunker but it's a great little inexpensive signal generator. It has several features that set it apart from other cheapie generators: 1. It has a calibrated output that goes all the way down to 1 microvolt. 2. The internal shielding keeps signal from leaking out. 3. It has a crystal marker for setting the output frequency. The first two features allow using the E-200D to align sensitive receivers. Cheaper generators generally have poor shielding and so they leak lots of ... moresignal. If you run the output down to zero on a cheap generator. A sensitive receiver will still show a strong signal. Signal is leaking. Another nice feature of the E-200D is a crystal marker. Which lets you accurately set the output frequency. It’s pretty accurate as-is, but on this page you will also find instructions on how to add a frequency counter for even better accuracy. As an added bonus. If you are looking for a very nice Heathkit signal generator. Look no farther. Excellent graphics.The freq range is 100KC trough 220MC in six bands with a 2% accuracy. The output is 50 ohms and the signal can be internally modulated with 400 cps. Now, this is not a lab quality instrument but is accurate enough to align vintage radios nicely. I restore radios as a hobby and use one just like it. The chassis and components are very clean. It is vintage test gear but I cleaned pots and aligned each band to spec. This is demonstrated with the photos. My frequency counter would not go into band F so I did not show the signal on it but it is good. Also notice the last photo that shows the modulated 400 signal. The waveforms show clean with no distortion. To check the calibrated output, just use a digital AM radio works well. Here is a B&K E-200D RF Signal generator in good working condition with some upgrades. The upgrades include replacing the obsolete MIC type RF output connector with a modern BNC type connector and adding an output for a frequency counter per instructions found on the internet that will be included with the documentation. The frequency counter output uses an SMA coax cable assembly. An SMA bulkhead connector, RG174/U coax and a BNC connector through the outer cabinet. If you don't want to use the extra output for a frequency counter, its presence makes no difference to the unit's operation. It does, however, make it a bit more difficult to remove and replace the outer cabinet and the inner RF enclosure for servicing. I have also replaced all of the electrolytic capacitors found on an internal circuit board. This classic military HF RF signal generator is in good overall condition. It covers 10Khz-50 Mhz in nine ranges. I have done some very basic testing. No RF meter indication in CW position on any range. Attenuator does not appear to be fully functional. However a stable signal is created which appears to be spot on for frequency. See picture no. 3. Modulation tones appear OK. Calibration oscillator also appears OK. But weak. This will definitely need some work and alignment to get fully functional. They all do.
