The overall length of the spade is 72cm and the heavy duty mild steel green painted blade is 19cm wide and 24cm tall with a folded tread at each side. The wood handles have either had the top T bar grip removed or they have never been fitted. NAVAL CUTLASS M-1841 SHORT SWORD
Up for bid is a Naval Cutlass M 1841. Manufactured by Ames. This model was an unusual and unpopular design among the enlisted sailors in the Navy. Because it was heavy and cumbersome, it made it hard to wield it on the rolling ship decks. Because of this, only 6600 of these were made between 1841 and 1847 and were replaced just before the Civil War with the more popular M1860 Naval Cutlass which over 24,000 were produced. Because of it's limited production and unpopularity, there are not many of the Cutlasses available. Marked US 1846 R on one side. Other side marked N.P. AMES Cabotville. It has military inspector's initial JL and RC on each side of the quillon. It has the federal eagle motif on either side on the pommel. No leather scabbard. Blade is well used with several battle nicks. Some pitting and dark patina. Front of basket ... moreguard shows nicks from battle use. There are some names scratched on the inside of hand guard, I cannot make them out. Stamped backside of brass guard 23, about 3/4" tall, with a smaller number 89 stamped on top. These numbers are known as a rack number when sword is not in use. Blade measures 21" overall length. Overall length of sword is 26 1/2" Blade width is 1 1/2" Brass grip has fish scale design. Weight is 2.5 lbs. I have listed this to the best of my knowledge, sold as is.

And dings.Series of dents above bridge cover shown in the 5th photo.also has some larger scratches on the back of the body so use the zoom feature to see these areas mentioned. All electronics work as they should. Small amount of noise in the volume and tone knobs. I always suggest a set-up and this bass could use one for sure. Does play fairly easy with slight buzzing. neck is straight. Nuts a little high for my taste.High string tuner arm is slightly benty but functions OK. Will come shipped in a generic gig bag.
