For offer is an antique tin and cardboard box that once held drill bits made by the Hardscocg Manufacturing Co. The company was well known for its mining equipment. Located in Ottumwa. Iowa, it was started in 1880 by Martin Hardsocg, an immigrant from Germany. Hardsocg had been a blacksmith, and after gaining knowledge working in mines and rock quarries, he invented the Little Wonder Rock Drill. The box is about 3.75 by 2.5 inches. Offered here is a near narrow gauge size mining equipment flat car. Manufactured by the C.S. Card Company of Denver, Colorado. Measures 17' total length, with a 16' 4" bed that measures 43" wide. Measures 22" between wheels, 16" wheels. Articulated sets of four wheels each. Link-type connections work easily. Acquired from a representative of the famous Camp Bird Mine near Ouray, Colorado, many years ago. Includes the two sections of heavy rail to sit on. Weighs in at around 2500 pounds, so a local pickup item only. I can haul it for $2.50 per loaded mile, but would rather it be picked up. This mining candlestick is in very good condition(see attached photos) This type of miner's equipment was typically used in mines as part of the essential equipment needed to do their very difficult work under the earth. Prior to the mid-1800s. Miners secured candles to their caps or the rocky walls of the mine using a clump of clay. Sometime in the 1860’s, Comstock area miners invented the miner’s candlestick by bending the end of a spike to hold the candle. The spike then could be jabbed into wooden support beams or crevices in the stone walls to light the way. The first candlestick was patented in 1872 and sometime soon after a hook was added to the many emerging designs. There are no chips, parts, or chunks missing on this ... morecandlestick.
