September can be one of the most invigorating times to fish the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. As summer closes, the clear waters begin cooling down, the heat subsides, and the river is emptied of floating traffic. And as the temperature cools, the water gets lower and slower – ideal fishing conditions.
As the water cools, the wild cutthroat follow their native instincts to start packing on weight for the difficult winter looming ahead. September is their last chance to gorge themselves on large terrestrials and tasty surface hatches before the winter doldrums of midge subsistence sets in.
Our September fishing trips are smaller and more personable than our Summer trips. As the days start to get shorter and we have the whole Wilderness nearly to ourselves, these trips take on a nostolgic and sportsman/sportswoman's vibe.
This is a special time for both guides and guests on the Middle Fork; our guides are excited to row you through the best Cutthroat fly fishing waters in the West. You will find them to be both knowledgeable leaders and wonderful companions, whether they’re sharing an exotic presentation technique, helping to improve an angler’s casting skills, cooking up one of our favorite dishes, or telling lively stories around the campfire.

The Middle Fork is the largest tributary of the Main Salmon River, which is the largest tributary of the Snake, which is the largest tributary of the Columbia, which is the largest ... moreNorth American tributary of the largest Ocean (the Pacific) in the world!
The Middle Fork is over 116 miles long (no dams) and descends over 4,000ft in elevation. As it grows from a tumbling creek to a mighty river, the Middle Fork is fed by runoff from spectacular mountain ranges such as The Sawtooths, Pistol Ridge, The Bighorn Crags, The Tango Peaks, and the Yellow Jacket Mountains.
A spectacular part of the Middle Fork is how much the geology, wildlife, vegetation, and size of the river changes as you descend from the top of the canyon all the way to the confluence with the Main Salmon. This biological diversity makes Middle Fork of the Salmon one of the most unique river experiences in the world.
Stanley is a town of 62 residents and is the population center of the state of Idaho. Regardless of its size, Stanley comes to life in the summer and has a good selection of lodging ... moreand dining. It is nestled between the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Frank Church Wilderness. Your orientation meeting will be at 6:00 PM at the Sawtooth Spirit. I recommend staying in Stanley on the night before your trip as well as the night of the last day of your trip, but if you do need to hit the road after your trip you will be able to get down to Boise that evening. (You will return to Stanley around 5:30 PM.) Our trip will start and end at the Mountain Village Lodge, which holds rooms for our guests. So for hassle, free lodging arrangements call them up and let them know you are floating the Middle Fork with Solitude. In case you want to browse some other Stanley lodging options, here are our recommendations. More information at www.rivertrips.com
The Middle Fork is one of the healthiest trout fisheries in the world. In addition to offering world-class Salmon River fly fishing and Idaho whitewater rafting, an entire biodiversity ... morecascades from this healthy ecological environment. The Middle Fork Canyon is one of the most important remaining environments for many species, including Wolf, Cougar, Lynx, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goats, Bobcat, Badger, River Otter, Elk, and Mule Deer. Birds such as Bald and Golden Eagles, Ouzel, Grouse, Chukar, Great Horned Owls, Red Tail Hawk, Osprey, Swallows, and countless cute songbirds that will wake you if you are late for breakfast.
Idaho has many flattering nomenclatures, such as ‘The White Water State’ and ‘The Wilderness State;’ Idaho’s first geological surveyors claimed that if you flattened out all of the terrain features in Idaho, it would be bigger than Texas. “The Frank,” as this Wilderness area is endearingly called, lives up to all of these reputations, and the Middle Fork provides a spectacular profile of its wonders. Floating along with the flow is the most comfortable way to experience this incredible river canyon.
Willi Cannell, the owner of Solitude River Trips, is an ardent self-educator of history, concepts, and issues surrounding Wilderness policy and protection. Please contact him in person if you would like more information pertaining to Wilderness in Idaho.
Like many western towns, Hailey came into being during the gold rush of the mid 1860’s, attracting speculators, adventurers and roust-a-bouts. While much of the city’s past is kept ... morealive by its Historic Preservation Commission, as indicated by its substantial list of National Registry Homes, the town is now a small gem with a sophisticated palate and yen for the visual and performing arts. Located east of the Smoky Mountains, often referred to as Idaho’s “forgotten mountain range,” the town is also known for its scenic beauty and year round, outdoor activities.

Friedman Airport is the airport of choice for both public and private flyers coming to Sun Valley to ski, fish or just have fun. Festivals and events take place throughout the summer and winter months, including an Arbor Day celebration, fiddler competitions, world-class skateboarding contests, antique fairs, and the Rough and Tumble, July 4th Rodeo. Its most unusual claim to fame may be the Sun Valley Bike Festival where cyclists race as they drag burning logs behind their bikes.
Once you arrive, whatever lodging you decide upon, and there is a plethora of choices, you will not be far from great fly fishing. The Big Wood River and Silver Creek are a stone’s throw away. In addition to myriad streams, there is Little Wood, Trail Creek, the Big Lost, Magic Reservoir, Mackay Reservoir, the Salmon River and the South Fork Boise to explore. For those who prefer cold mountain lakes, the list to pick from is long and inviting. For the truly dedicated and hardy, some of Wood River’s best fishing takes place in the winter months. What’s your reward for withstanding the cold? Hopefully, plump 14 to 18 inch rainbow trout.
