Pictures do not lie but the metal bezel around the meter looks more corroded in the pictures than it appears in reality(in my opinion) There is some unfortunate corrosion around one of the front panel screws as shown in the pictures. I have a dded a new photo of the ba ck of the unit and also one of a schematic page from the manual. The cord will need replacem ent as well. Because of these over sights. I have reduced the starting bid price. Apologies for any confus ion. CUBIC 45- DIGI TAL V OLTMETER COMES WITH COMPLETE OPERATOR/SERVICE MANUAL. That's harder to find than the instrument itself! This is a nice museum piece; one of the first digital voltmeters models ever made! I believe only NLS(Non Linear Systems) made earlier voltmeters(by a few months) This meter actually works(on the 10V scale) but I did not test the higher voltage scales as someone needs to check that all is okay before applying higher voltages. ... moreIn fact I shouldn't have even powered-up the unit until I checked out the power supply a bit better; all worked okay and I had it running for a couple of hours(mind you it was running on a Sencore AC Powerite unit for added safety) I started to clean up the front panel(center section) and it cleans up very nicely! As you can see. The front panel still need considerable cleanup around the knobs and terminals but I thought I would leave this enjoyment for the person that restores the unit(maybe you? The unit runs on stepper relays. Probably some sort of successive approximation technique. The sounds it makes when"seeking" the input voltage level are amazing; it is very slow at acquiring a stable reading(about 5 seconds for a 3.0V input) I have not read the manual but I am guessing that the"sensitivity" knob is to keep out the noise, or fluctuating component of the input voltage otherwise the stepping relays would never keep up. The housing is a bit different(I'll explain in a second) as it seems to be alodined/anodized metal. Wow. Here we have a Radiation Survey Meter Model SU-1 made by Tracerlab in Boston. Massachusetts. Based on my research, this was the first commercial version of a Tracerlab"Cutie Pie. An advertisement for this Tracerlab"Cutie Pie" first appeared in the 1948(p.68) issue of Nucleonics. The operating manual for this meter( which I do not have) apparently describes the meter as a"Portable Radiation Instrument. The meter is in very good shape. I popped the side cover off and took pictures of the inside. It appears that everything is there and in good order. The battery compartment inside is clean as well since someone must have emptied it before storage. If you look closely. You'll see Philips head machine screws holding the side covers in place. When I got the meter, all these screws were missing, so I replaced them. I ... moresuppose if you wanted to be more correct, you would change them to flat head. UPDATE: Thanks to an informed eBay reader. I was able to unlock the meter movement(there is a silver locking button on top of the meter movement) and apply a small test current. Viola! it worked. Actually, the needle seems to bump up against something internal when trying to go right. Could be that the locking mechanism is not entirely releasing, I'm not certain, but at least there is a response from the meter mechanism itself! I also noted a small amount of adhesive in the top left and right of the meter display window. I think this could easily be restored to a more presentable look if so desired. It basically cosists of a polished lacquered Mahogany box with a removeable rear panel. By removing this door. Access is gained to the battery compartment, glass wool air filter, switch and lamp assembly for back-lighting the display. When sampling is required the catch is released on the lower front panel and the large Brass plunger is released.
