This is the Hewlett Packard model HP 970A Digital Probe Multimeter. Introduced 40 years ago. It was a unique, self-contained instrument for one-handed use. This auto-ranging multimeter reads AC volts, DC volts, and ohms. Unfortunately, the original 10-volt nicad battery cartridge died during the 1980s and no replacements could be found. Rather than discard a useable multimeter, the owner used alligator clips to connect a 9-volt battery, and used the meter that way. Thus it works, but is sold as-is. Perhaps you can find a replacement or rebuilt battery cartridge, remove the clips, and use the meter as originally designed. This auction includes the multimeter. The venerable 3476B Digital Multimeter from the glory days of HP's instrument business. Still made with gold plated circuit boards and premium components. Still accurate with all functions working. As tested against two other calibrated multi-meters. Manual w/ calibration instructions included. In very good condition. With a new battery pack. The B version of this product is the same as the 3476A but with the added capability of charging and operating off of internal batteries. I'd call it perfect condition.
