Kwik 200 Quill Spindle From Hurco KMB1 Vertical Milling Machine
It spins free and was in service right up until I pulled it. I pulled it because the quill stuck in the head of the mill. It is badly scored. And the scoring was causing it not to oil properly. Not oiling properly caused it to stick. I suspect at some time it was run without oil in the quill to cause the scoring. If you just need spindle and quill parts this might be handy for you to pickup. The internals seem to be fine. The tool lock is a little finicky sometimes. But I used it everyday. If you need a whole quill because yours is toast I would probably keep looking. I've been told this could be ground repaired by grinding re-chroming. And regrinding, but I imagine that would be pretty darn expensive. On the other hand I've seen guys selling used quills here on Ebay for nearly two grand, so maybe it would be worth it. I expect just ... morethe parts are worth atleast several hundred. They do not have a forklift strong enough to pick up and place, but they can lift it a few inches off the ground to move it. The controls are not functioning. But the machine does power up. It has a 2 HP motor and the table measures 12 1/2 inches by 34 inches. The spindle was recently re-built and is believed to be in good condition. Power feed to X axis thru gearbox on side of machine. Note: drive shaft is not hooked up but parts appear to be there. 9 brown& Sharpe taper in vertical& horizontal spindles including drawbars& about 99% complete. Missing drive belts and small shaft for tilting motor when changing belts is not there. Linkage is there that attaches to motor plate and probably used the knee crank to move when shifting. The handles for changing the X axis feeds are not installed. Shown in photo's, missing knob. ... moreThe helical gear in the housing bolts up to the X axis saddle and drives the X axis screw. The drive is a nice old sterling mechanical variable speed 3 phase. 220/440V. Peckerhead missing but otherwise all there. I believe you can still get parts from sterling for any drives they built. Machine was partially disassembled when we got it sitting in a shed. So some surfaces are rusty, especially the dials& the handles for gearbox. Generally the ways are pretty good and the screws do not seem to be badly worn. The spindle turns ok, but I noticed a tight spot that I can turn up to each way like the spur gears in the transmission get tight from crap in the teeth or something like that is happening. I did not look into it any further. Tooling included: All# 9 Brown& Sharpe.
