2 Pcs Bismuth Metal Element Disks Diamagnetic Levitation not Pyrolytic Graphite
This auction is for the two bismuth metal disks shown in the photos. Bismuth is the 2nd most diamagnetic material available(at room temp) only behind pyrolytic graphite. The disks are roughly 1.38" dia. X 0.150" thk and 1.39" dia. X 0.154" thk. They weigh ~1.2 oz each. They have some minor dings and scratches(one side better than the other on each) from checking to make sure they work and taking the photos-which is why I list them as used. The may also have small imperfections from crystal formation during cooling. The magnet in the photos is a 1/4" square X 1/8" thk and I think a grade 40. Which I will include in the auction. You supply the lifter magnet. The gap shown in the photo is a little over a 1/4" Different size and strength magnets will require a different gap. This is equine sculpture in a totally different medium. Those amazing crystals run throughout the whole horse! Metals crystallize as they cool, and if done slowly enough, they're big enough to see. They change colors until their temperature drops. It's like watching colors play musical chairs. This one stopped with nice golds and purples. I sculpted the horse, and made a series of special molds that allow for the manipulation of several variables. They include temperature, the rate of change of temperature at different parts in the mold, oxygen abundance and some others. I melt the Wismut or Bismuth and pour it in the mold. Since I cannot see the crystals forming beneath ... morethe surface, I orchestrate it's cooling paying careful attention to every detectable variable. If I time it right, I dump the still molten metal and reveal the beautifully frozen crystals beneath. If I didn't time it right, I start over at the mold making process. What you get 1. the exact sculpture in the picture. The sculpture without the base is about 7 inches tall and weighs about 8 pounds. 2. A cube shaped acrylic base. 4 inches) I sculpted the horse. And made a series of special molds. I melted the Bismuth and poured it into the final mold. I cannot see the crystals forming beneath the surface. I have to time my moves just right. After it cools a while some of the metal will have frozen up around the edges of the mold. I dump the metal that is still molten off the top and reveal the beautifully"frozen" crystals beneath. All this is done in my studio in homemade furnaces. Bismuth is a rare and little known metal, only twice as abundant as gold in the earths crust) The crystals form under the liquid metal as it slowly freezes. Bismuth ingot - Rare World Metals Mint - one troy oz - .9999 - precious metal
This listing is for a single. One troy ounce ingot of bismuth. Some of bismuth's many unusual properties have been known since ancient times when it was thought to be a precursor of silver that the Earth wasn't quite finished making yet. It has a low melting point of 521 degrees fahrenheit, is a dense metal, it expands upon freezing as only a few other metals do, it has semiconductor properties, is generally considered to be among the most diamagnetic metals and has the highest Hall coefficient. Bismuth is rare in the Earth's crust(see below link to our favorite chart detailing where our metals fall in terms of rarity) being about twice as prevalent as gold. It is also considered an economically important metal with potential for supply chain risk as most of the world's supply comes from China. It therefore is near the top of the British Geologic Survey's Risk list(see below link) Inscribed on our ingots are the chemical symbol(Bi) Purity(99.99% weight(one troy ounce) and a serial number(this number is unique and will vary) On the reverse is our logo.
