1889 SHARP & SMITH STAINLESS STEEL SURGICAL TONSILLOTOME KIT; 2 DEVICES TOOLS
For sale is an antique(1889) 2-device stainless steel tonsilectomy kit in its original leather box. This kit contains two incredible pieces of surgical engineering that are still sharp and fully operative today. The two devices are known as tonsillotomes. Each safely grips. Cuts and removes a piece of tissue, such as a tonsil, within seconds. On the inside, the box is marked"Sharp& Smith, Manufacturers of Surgical Instruments, 73 Randolph St. Chicago IL" The box is 9.5" long by 5.5" wide by 1.4" deep. As discussed below, each of these instruments is shown in the 1889 Catalogue of Sharp& Smith Surgical Instruments. I will send you a copy of the title page and the two relevant pages showing the instruments. As noted above. This kit contains two differnet instruments(tonsillotomes) for performing the same surgical ... moreprocedure(tonsillectomy) Referring to Google's digitized 1889 Catalogue of Sharp& Smith Surgical Instruments at p 448, the first instrument is shown as item no. 2322, and identified as a Mathieu's tonsillotome. The Mathieu's tonsillotome is a planar device with a retractable cutting loop and two impaling prongs that are controlled by two fingers and a thumb. This instrument is shown as the lower instrument in photos 1-3 and the diagonal instrument in the box in photo 4. The various positions of this device during operation are shown in photos 5-8. In photo 5, the device is shown in ready position so that the tonsil to be cut can be placed through the loop. In this position, the surgical blade is safely retracted and positioned between an upper and lower stainless steel sheath. In photo 6, the first thing that happens as the device is squeezed is that two prongs advance to immobolize the tissue relative to the device and the cutting edge. In photos 7-8, the cutting edge is shown in the positions it would be as it advanced midway(photo 7) and all the way(photo 8) through the tonsil. Gorgeous Set of French 18th c. Style Brass and Steel Fireplace Tools
This amazing set of mid 18th c. style brass and steel fireplace tools have gorgeously cast and chased brass handles and spiral twist steel shafts. They are all hand made and made to the highest standard. I debated whether these tools were actual from the 18th century or not but decided that. Given their lack of wear, they were probably made in the early 20th c. by master craftsmen in France. The handles are in the baroque manner with tooled acanthus leaves, rosettes and spires with tooled fielded reserves. The steel parts of these tools appear all to be hand forged and riveted. This set come with a custom made brass hanger probably made in the 1970's or 80's. The tools are all approximately 28" long and are in fabulous condition.
