EXTREMELY RARE Youngstown Sheet & Tube Steel Basketball Pole Brier Hill
Up for auction is an EXTREMELY RARE piece of Youngstown Steel history! I grew up in Youngstown and my father worked in the Steel Industry for 30 years! My dad contacted some of his friends at Youngstown Sheet and Tube and had them take sections of 4 1/2 inch galvanized steel conduit and make a basketball pole. There are 2 straight sections and a curved section that you attach with threaded couplers. Also a steel threaded plate that you attach the backboard to. Total height is over 13 feet tall. Plenty of room to bury the base in the ground. See pics) Well shortly after getting the pole, September 19. 1977 came! Also known in the Mahoning Valley as Black Monday. It was the beginning of the end for the steel industry in Youngstown! We were one of the many families that moved and the pole was carried from Youngstown to New Jersey to South Carolina ... moreand back to Ohio, never being put in the ground! My dad gave me the pole before he passed and I have had it for over 12 years, carrying it from house to house as I have moved. Finally realizing I will never put it in the ground and what a RARE and EXCEPTION this piece is I have decided to put it on eBay. I obviously can't ship it but will store it free of charge to the winning bidder, just make proper arrangements.
