They are number 991 with an outside diameter of 2 1/4 inches(smaller) and 994 with an outside diameter of 3 inches(larger) The larger one is still flexible and filled with air- it has pretty much a donut shape; while the smaller one is hardened and brittle with both sides being in contact with each other- sort of like a'cap' rather a donut. What you are viewing is a complete set of 15 antique 1910s era Gynecological Intra-uterus contraceptive pessar rings and stems found in the original box and were made by the Frank S. Bentz Co. in Hammond. Indiana. Pieces are in great condition with only minor aging and wear to the box to contend with and display wonderfully for there age. Pieces have been dated with the use of the 1910-1911 George Washington stamp on the side of the box and measures 5 3/8in X 2 3/4in X 3 1/4in. This is an 19th century pessary mold made of solid brass. These were used in making suppositories for the bowels or for vaginal maladies/ birth control. This brass mold dates from the 19th century. There are later versions of this mold by the same makers S. MAW.SON& THOMPSON but the later versions did not have LONDON embossed in the brass. This came from the home of a doctor that collected early American and English medical pieces. He collected during the 1930s thru the early 1960s. This is a hefty precision piece of solid brass construction. I found a little information on the piece months ago but quite honestly forgot most of what I read. Please examine all my 12 photos well. This is truly an unusual piece to find. It measures a little over 5 3/4in long, almost 1 inch wide and is 1 1/2 inch deep. An interesting antique medical device- GOLD PESSARY Paratex brand solid gold 14k pessary. Dating from probably the 1930s. Measures approximately 2 1/4" in length. Comes with the original box. And what is a"pessary. you ask? Well. Towards the end of the 19th century. Intra-cervical devices, most of them made of metal, began to be used for contraception. These'stem' pessaries had a button lodged against the vaginal wall, with a stem protruding into the uterus through the cervix. Stem pessaries were still listed in medical catalogs in the 1930s but were probably not used much after this. As you can discern. This is a relatively rare medical device!
