Image information: Confederate prisoners waiting at Chattanooga to be sent north. 1864 During the early part of the war prisoner exchanges were common. The men from each side would typically be paroled on the condition that they would not take up arms until a man of equal rank was released from the opposing sides. This“unofficial” arrangement was often made between the commanding generals. Lee and McClellan even exchanged letters proposing that surgeons and wounded not be considered prisoners and be released immediately. These types of arrangements worked well at the beginning. But soon presented a problem in Washington. A formal system of prisoner exchanges would mean that the United States would have to recognize the Confederacy. By doing so in effect the Confederate States would win the acknowledgement that they were a separate government ... moreand therefore help them to be recognized as a sovereign nation. This in turn might bring political and military support to the Confederacy, for this reason all exchanges were stopped just prior to Gettysburg in 1863. For most of the rest of the war the Prisoner Of War population on both sides grew to alarming numbers. By some estimates as many as 400,000 men were prisoners at some point during the war. By not exchanging prisoners the United States succeeded not only in keeping the recognition the Confederacy wanted, but deprived them of soldiers that they desperately needed. With the end of the war in site exchanges did resume again in January of 1865, by this time it was too late for the South and there was little benefit to keeping them in the North. This is a pre WWI US Navy Official photo postcard of the Cruiser USS Chattanooga C-16(later PG-30& CL-18) The postcard photo is a color tinted. Printed photo image, it is not a US Navy real photo or RPPC postcard. The postcard image was made from an actual real photograph taken by famed US Navy Official Photographer Enrique Muller, Jr. of New York City NYC. Minor all around wear/rounding(see images) to card front corner points and edges; there are tiny(approx. 1/16" or less) point tip scuff traces and or tip crimps right at/on the actual tips of several of the front corner points; HOWEVER, all FRONT CORNER POINTS and EDGES remain FIRM and SHARP. Nearly invisible in our images(you must look closely) out from each of the front upper corner points, there diagonal, ... moreapproximately 1/3" width, color diminishment bands. WHAT ARE THEY? This postcard was apparently in a postcard album for many years where it was held in place by having its corners inserted through slits in the album page. Over the years the pressure of the page bands, on the postcard surface, diminished the tinted surfaces ever so slightly. Also invisible in the card front images, but visible in the card back image, is a left to right, edge to edge, wrinkle line. In the card front, it is hidden, even to the naked eye, in the greenish ocean. In the card back(see image) it appears as a vertical wrinkle line, running down from the top edge, just to the left of the stamp box. HOWEVER, this AREA OF THE POSTCARD remains ABSOLUTELY FIRM. The card back itself is very clean overall and all printed text and the stamp box remain quite sharp. WITHOUT the"wrinkle line" this postcard WOULD HAVE RATED HIGHER! Hamilton National Bank Note 1929 from Chattanooga Tn. I am not a currency dealer and have little expertise in this area. So please ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them. It does have some creases, but I don't see any tears. It is currently in a plastic sleeve with(123L, 274S) EDEEDTJ Chattanooga, TN CH#7848 K50F nikc on the label. This may have something to do with grading, you be the judge.

Beginning on August 21, 1863, as the opening battle in the Chickamauga Campaign. The larger and more famous battles were the Battles for Chattanooga(generally referred to as the Battle of Chattanooga) in November 1863. On August 16. 1863, Maj. Gen. William ... moreS. Rosecrans. Commander of the Army of the Cumberland. Launched a campaign to take Chattanooga. Tennessee. Col. John T. Wilder's brigade of the Union 4th Division. XIV Army Corps. Marched to a location northeast of Chattanooga where the Confederates could see them, reinforcing Gen. Braxton Bragg's expectations of a Union attack on the town from that direction. On August 21. Wilder reached the Tennessee River opposite Chattanooga and ordered the 18th Indiana Light Artillery( Capt. Eli Lilly's battery) to begin shelling the town. The shells caught many soldiers and civilians in town in church observing a day of prayer and fasting. The bombardment sank two steamers docked at the landing and created a great deal of consternation amongst the Confederates. Continuing periodically over the next two weeks. The shelling helped keep Bragg's attention to the northeast while the bulk of Rosecrans's army crossed the Tennessee River well west and south of Chattanooga.
