ANTIQUE BRASS GONG/BELL FOR HAND PULLED FIRE HOSE CART
This is an antique bell for a hand pulled fire hose cart. The bell is made of brass and frame is steel and it is 11" in diameter and weighs 16 lbs. I have pictures from the Minneapolis Firefighters Museum that show a 1899 Waterous hose cart with a very similar bell. This type of bell would have been attached to the axle of the hose cart along with an activator attached to the wheel itself. Every time the wheel turned. The activator would ring the bell. This was an early siren that would alert pedestrians that the fire department was coming down the street. It also assisted the fireman as they didn't have to keep yelling"get the hell out of the way" This is missing the bottom of the axle mounting bracket and the activator. At some time in the past, a hole was frilled through lever that extends from the bottom of the bell. ... moreThis is the piece that came in contact with the activator. I would guess that was done so the bell could be manually operated or that it would prevent the lever from hitting the activator on every wheel rotation. On a long run, I imagine that the bell ringing could get old. If you have a an antique hose cart that need that extra something this might be the piece. While a duck with a little hat and a long beak drives. The toy is all wood, brightly painted in wonderful vintage shades of red, yellow, orange, green and blue. Just from the look of the duck and the dog, I believe it may be European, possibly German, but there are no markings. The dog moves in his traces. All wheels turn. There is one slotted screw holding the two main pieces together. Measures 15 1/2" long x 8" high x 6” across outside of the back wheels. The dog most likely had separate ears. There are short nails on either side of his head. But no ears. His tail is also gone. The pull cord is no longer present. CONDITION Nice vintage condition. Only gently worn. This is another authentic. Colorful Italian/ Sicilian folk art piece that my grandmother brought back from her travels in Italy in the 1950s-70. This is a decorative and functional woven wood handbasket with a red(wool? velveteen-like. Drawstring lining. The drawstrin has two tassles on the ends. The basket is decorated with mirrors, bells, colorful tassles and ribbon bows with medallion centers, and pom-poms, to match the parade horses and carts used in the festivals. The basket itself. The 33" x 11 1/2" cart has a solid wood adjustable seat supported by springs and clean, oiled roller bearings. The cart was found in the dry, well ventilated attic of the barn that has been in the same family for three generations. The cart is in very good condition. It's working; as my 8 year old son(pictured) can attest! The only negative I can find is that the rubber grips are gone. Otherwise the tires, paint and decals are worn commensurate with age and gentle use and are still bright& vibrant. This was an expensive toy for the time and as such it was gently used and well kept. Antique hand carved wooden sculpture of ox and cart from Cambodia. Beautiful!
A dear friend spent a couple of wonderful years in his youth(1950s) in rural Cambodia where his father was a roadbuilder and his mother taught school. Both he and his parents were inveterate collectors and came back from their travels with many pieces of memorabilia. This is one of the nicest. This is a beautifully rendered sculpture of an ox yoked to a cart with a lidded container on it. I don't know what kind of wood this is made of. But I can tell you it's very light and dark. The ox is about six and a quarter inches long from snout to tail. The cart(not counting the yoke) is about five and a half inches long.the yoke harness thing extends about five inches from the cart and fits over the ox's shoulders. The container that fits on the cart has a moveable lid that opens and closes. The container can be removed from the cart. ... moreI don't know who carved this piece but it's probably a very accurate portrayal of the kind of ox and cart used in rural Cambodia. A super piece.

Here we have a wonderful antique primitive wooden hand cart with cast iron wheels! This fine piece measures about 38 1/2" tall x 16" wide x 16" deep and has a hand wrought iron loop in one of the uprights so the load can be secured. The wheels measure about 4 3/8" in diameter. It is a light duty cart and was probably used to carry luggage at one of the old North Catskill hotels. It is'barn fresh' from a local estate and has a fine aged patina(see photos) There are no splits. Cracks or repairs in the wood that I can find and, although it is structurally sound, it is a bit wobbly and needs to be tightened up if you plan on using it. A great addition to your collection!
