An original antique map of COUNTY DURHAM(Episcopatus Dunelmensis) by Johan Blaeu. Published in 1645 and later in Blaeu's Atlas Novus and Atlas Maior. The map is unframed. Unmounted, printed on good quality paper, has contemporary hand colour and is untrimmed. It has Spanish text verso. Features of the map include: three coats-of-arms(including the royal arms and the arms of the Bishop of Durham) decorative title cartouche with pastoral figures and lambs; mileage scale; and three sailing ships. The map is in excellent condition.

British WW1 The Durham Light Infantry Cap Badge
I will be listing several British badges over the next few days. British badges are a nightmare to the uninitiated and I cannot determine if they are original or restrikes, etc but they all came from a collection gathered between 1960-80. I can only assume that there are some good ones as well as some of the earlier restrikes etc, you as the buyer should be aware of just how difficult this field of collecting is and educate yourselves prior to purchasing. Up for auction is a Lawrence"Crash" Davis(Deceased 2001) the inspiration for Kevin Costner’s character Crash Davis in Bull Durham autograph that has been matted with an unsigned 8x10 inch photograph. The black matt measures 11x14 inches and is perfect for framing. Crash Davis is a rare autograph to obtain and this item is a must have for any true baseball fan. BIO: Lawrence"Crash" Davis(Deceased) was an MLB player whose name inspired that of the main character played by Kevin Costner in the 1988 movie Bull Durham. Born in Canon. Georgia, and raised in Gastonia, North Carolina, Davis earned the nickname"Crash" at age 14 when he collided with a teammate when chasing down a fly ball. Davis excelled as a middle infielder at Duke University, where he was the captain of the baseball team and a member of the Chi Phi ... moreFraternity until he graduated in 1940. After graduating from Duke. Davis played three seasons for the Philadelphia Athletics, batting.230 in 148 games. He was drafted into the United States Navy in 1942 amid World War II, and was assigned to Harvard University where he helped run the ROTC program. Davis also coached Harvard's baseball and squash teams. When he was discharged from the Navy in 1946. Davis returned to Durham to begin graduate school at Duke and play for the Durham Bulls, then a part of the Carolina League. Davis would play in the minor leagues, with teams including the Reidsville Luckies and the Raleigh Capitals, until 1952. After Bull Durham was released. Davis became a minor celebrity. He befriended the director of the film, Ron Shelton, and Shelton gave him a bit part in his movie Cobb about controversial baseball player Ty Cobb. Suitable for a double or single sized bed depending on how much you like to drape over the sides. This is a great quilt for layering together with other old quilts. It is hand stitched in lines to keep the quilted layers together. It is reversible. The best side being the side with the floral centre and pink border. The other side is just as pretty but the colours are more muted. The edges show rubbing and fraying but could be left as they are if you like shabby chic or rustic decor. This adds character and to my opinion makes the piece even more special. If you need perfection then I'm guessing that you would be looking at reproduction quilts rather than ... moreat this original, antique, hand crafted beauty. The quilt is made of cotton with cotton wadding. Making a lightweight, natural-fibre bed throw. It has been recently hand washed in cool water with a mild detergent and fabric conditioner so it is fresh and ready for immediate snuggling! I am selling more of my quilt collection so please take a look at my other items. About Durham quilts: In the latter part of the 19th century and early 20th century there were many quilting clubs in the villages of North East England. A club would be run by one quilter who would find about twenty clients to buy quilts. They would pay the quilter weekly until they had covered the full cost of the quilt. This enabled the quilter to buy all her materials and produce a quilt about every 3 weeks. Customers paid about one shilling a week until about £3.10s.0d was collected. The average labourers wage in England at this time was around 12 shillings so £3.10 shillings was the equivalent of 6 weeks wage. I hope this goes to someone who will treasure it and pass it on as an heirloom. It looks set to keep people warm and cosy for another few decades!

I decided to spend last week on a mini buying trip- visiting all my contacts in the North of England and Southern Scotland. I managed to find some beautiful Victorian and Edwardian items– amongst other treats, a collection of silk shawls, fabulous buttons, Victorian christening gowns from an estate in Northumberland, and some stunning hand stitched Durham quilts. I also had a delivery from France, so February begins with a rather splendid mixture of French, Scottish and English treasures… enjoy browsing! I have managed to find some stunning Edwardian and Victorian hand stitched quilts for you this week- all in amazing condition. This one is intricately hand stiched- palest buttmilk ... moreon one side. And white on the other. Apparently never used(the lady who sold this told me it still had all the original blue printing marks- but she washed the quilt to remove these. So no wear at all, no marks, stains or damage. It is a very large quilt- shown here on a King size four poster bed, and measuring 238cm x 212cm. So difficult to find in such excellent condition, and incredibly beautiful patterns on this one. It is black on both sides with one tiny area of very slight fading- see last image. Apologies for the photos- black is a nightmare to capture, especially at this time of year with such low light levels. The quilt is a deep Raven's wing black- not blue, as it appears to be in some of the photographs. It is a very large quilt- shown here on a King size four poster bed, and measuring 260cm x 214cm. So difficult to find, and incredibly smart, especially teamed up with pure linen monogrammed antique sheets(2 listed this week. Fabulous for a gentleman's bedroom! More photographs below.
