The width of the jaws is 3-1/2" and it also opens up to 3-1/2" It is not a light vise, it weighs around 11 lbs. but I would think it is more of a drill press vise and would not recommend it for any milling applications. ANTIQUE BLACKSMITH'S WAGON TONGUE VISE - 1800'S - ORIGINAL
Up for sale is an original antique blacksmith's wagon tongue vise from the 1800's that appears to have been handforged. These were used by travelling Blacksmiths that had a travelling blacksmith forge in a wagon. Sually with a large anvil. The wagon tongue was connected to the front of the wagon and then attached to the horse's harness. Once the horse was removed, the blacksmith bolted the vise to the wagon tongue and then supported the front of the vise by either a tree stump or other wood. Many of these were used during the Civil War as well as the wagon train migration out west during the 1800's. This came out of a garage from a very old house many years ago. It measures 18 inches long,from top of jaws to the bottom of the bolt. about12 inches wide closed, from top of the handle by the screw, across to the othe side. Overall, ... moreit is in good original condition with some light rust and pitting. The screw is in good condition and moves freely. The vise is missing the leaf spring and the bottom bar and bolts where it was bolted to the wagon tongue. The top bar is there. I've seen the leaf springs for sale on ebay. These parts can also be made by any blacksmith or metal worker. This is an awesome example of an antique handforged vise from a bygone era when metal repairs or tools had to be made on the spot. It can be fixed up and used. Or displayed in an antique tool or blacksmith collection. It would even look great left as is, and proudly displayed. This is a very cool looking piece. Smith & Mills 12" Metal Shaper & Original Vise Cincinnati, OH shaping machine
Up for bids is a Smith and Mills 12 inch shaper. I bought this machine a couple of weeks ago at a local sale from a gentleman who had owned this shaper for many years. What I know about it was told to me by him. Although it is in need of new paint. This machine works well. It turns easily by hand without noise or roughness. The original input shaft and bracket has been replaced and it is now driven by an Orbmark hydraulic motor. This shaft also has a two grooved sheave installed on it for use with an electric motor. He also installed an internal pillow block bearing on the outboard end of the shaft for additional support. This bearing is shown in a photo. There is no looseness in the drive gears; it turns very, very smoothly. The original shaft and bracket(no pulley) is undamaged and included in this auction. The original shaft/bracket, tool ... moreholders and tooling is shown in a photo. I have not seen it run at speed as I don't have access to hydraulics. Click on the main image for a super sized shot with zoom capabilities for all images. The shaper comes with the original vise which measures nine inches across. It swivels by loosening a nut on the underneath side. It sits on a thick. Brass plate that is inscribed with scaled markings. The vise is in great shape, the jaws are undamaged and it operates freely and smoothly. I turned it easily just using my fingers. The machine is roughly 46 inches tall and 33 inches in depth. It is believed it to weigh around 1000 pounds. There are two welded repairs at floor level on the base of the machine. Both look to be about 2-3 inches long. One is on a corner and the other about 12 inches down the side. Neither is showing additional cracking. I took photos of each repaired spot. The machine is anchored to some cribbing by lag bolts in order to raise it to a working height. I don't know anything about metal working machines but the man showed me how it operates by turning it manually. I have for auction this vintage Wilton pattern makers multi use under mount bench vise the elongated/ pattern jaws measure 4' wide and the other. Wood working jaws measures 7' wide. The vise opens up comfortably 8 1/4' the vise is in good + used condition. It is as found right out of an estate of a woodworker. It is in need of a good cleaning. There is nothing broken or repaired. There is some wear to the top of the carpenter jaws, The pattern jaws are slightly out of alignment. the wood spacer plates are glued to the vise. I am sure they are an easy replace if the new owner wants to or needs to. The special feature of this vise is: the mount plate, when the user loosens the cylinder bolt, the user can pivot to either set of jaws or position the jaws on an angle. A cool feature.
