OLD BROWN & SHARPE J.T. SLOCOMB OUTSIDE MICROMETER W/ ORIG WOOD BOX PROVIDENCE
In 1833 David Sharpe and his son Joseph and J.R. Brown started the famous machine company. In 1853. Lucian Sharpe joined to make it the Brown& Sharpe Mfg. Co. They made cotton machinery and clocks etc. micrometers. And this micrometer box. They both went to the Paris Exposition in 1867 and were inspired to make micrometers. Etc. and now make several hundred different styles and sizes. However. This Micrometer Caliper that was originally in this box has been replaced by another similar Providence, R.I. toolmaker, J.T. Slocomb. It was made with hardened tool steel. It enabled the user to measure by the thousandth of an inch from 1" to 2" I'm not sure of the age of these, but a like micrometer originally sold for around $11.00 in 1938 and now, new, sell for $179-$250. Again, these are some of the best precision micrometers ... moreused by craftsmen all over the world. The micrometer is in good condition and is about 5 1/2" long and complete with the previous owner's manual. The micrometer is used. So there is some paint scraped off during use, all seen in my pictures. This auction includes this very rare box joint wooden box. It is made from the local native pine from the New England area. Common for the era of the 1920's and 1930's. Its"Brown& Sharpe" graphics are embossed into the top and with the use of the finger pull, you slide the top onto the box. The box is in good condition with no cracks. It is a little dirty, but all the graphics are legible, the joints are tight, and even has the tag at the end of the box. Vintage antique LUFKIN inside micrometer set No. 680 Patent 1927 No. 80 Exc!
Dated 1927. This set is in excellent condition. I see no damage or corrosion, just light wear from occasional use. On the inside of the box is the previous owners. This gentleman worked for the Sherwin Williams Paint co. until retiring in the 1960's. This comes from a box of machinist tools that date between 1900 and 1960's. Easy to read analog dial that measures the thickness of your cane or reed. The stand is made of solid brass. The anvil is polished stainless steel. Measure precisely with an analog dial marked in 1/100mm increments. Insert the anvil into your reed to measure the thickness of each blade. Lay your gouged cane across the top of the anvil to measure the thickness of the gouge.

This auction is for a used Ames Dial Micrometer. Model 5662-1, made by the B.C. Ames Company of Waltham, Massachusetts, U.S.A. It has a full range of 1" in steps of 0.001" with a throat depth of 6" A padded carrying box is also included. The condition of this micrometer is as as follows: The micrometer pointers(major and minor) turn properly over the full range. And return to zero when the lever is released. The zeroing dial turns freely when unlocked. The anvil and spindle faces are smooth with some very light scratches. The dial body has a number engraved into its back. The micrometer's blue crinkle coating is in excellent condition. The carrying box has some scuff marks. Tears and stains. This micrometer is being sold as-is. It has not been tested against any known thickness standard.
